Wood, of tlie Pennsylvania Rillroad, that bis com pany would not issue special holiday pxcurfion tickets this year, lias caused unslderabln surprise, ui the practice has been so long In force, people con templating holiday excursions had been holding back to avail themselves of the reduced rate. This year, at least, they will hnve to pay the pre vailing excursion rates averaging about two nnd one-half cents per mile and it is not unlikely that tho day for cheap excursions the direct cause which led to rate-cuttiug-is a' thing of the past. But theabolltion of thespecial holiday excursion rate d m not only apply to the Pennsylvania Rillroad, but to all the eastern trunk lines, tbo Presideuts of which, at their recent meeting, having decided upon this action. To the Penusylvaula Railroad it nifnus more than appears on the surface. These holiday tickets cost the pur chaser about two cents a mile; tho rgulur excursion rntfs average be tween two and one-quarter and two and one-half cents per mile; so, thatthe lucoma to the company during the period usually covered by the holiday tickfrte, will now be from one-quarter to one-half cent a mile more thau pre vious yeais, and In the aggregate this means a large sum of money. It has been said that failure to issue holiday tickets will tend to lessen the number of sale, but the officers of the company do not hold this view, claiming theie will be little or no decrease in the number of passengers carried. TiTEUE is no necessity for the I'otts rllle Republican to get on its high horso over what the Herald has said regarding the selection of a place for the teachers' institute, nor is it proper that it should urge Prof. Weiss to remember it next year. Wo have no apology to oiler. Unlike our contem porary, we are in a position to speak independently on Institute adalrs, and are not haudlcjpped by "past favors." In reply to n little piece of jubilation over tbeauununcenieut.thnt Pottavllle would be selected as the ne;:t place for the teachers' Institute wo said that that town was welcome to it, as our people did not desire It, and what we eaid was the truth. Bupt. Weiss was not considered In the matter nnd no insult was offered or intended for him. We do not think the superintendent will be foolish enough to "nniember" anything in connection with what we have said and that he will allow tho teachers to decide the place of meeting by their ballots In the future as he has done in tue past. Meanwhile our ontemporary may rest assured that no threats will hamper us In wielding ur pen. As far as o 111 CO seeking and office getting' are concerned, Ohio fairly takes the cake; In point of fact, It has taken it and held it for a number of years. The Buckeye is naturally an office seeker, and he is endowed with n spirit of pertinacity that distances all competitors. He is not only ener getlc, but persevering to a degree that Is absolutely marvellous, and what Is more to the point, is generally Buccess ful, though at times there are nlany more pegs than there are holes to re ceive them. That la the case Just now. Senator Brlcc is so overrun with ap plications that he has opened a sort of employment agency, where applicants are requested to file their applications, and ho has been bo pestered by vari ous office seekers from the state he represents that he has ordered the Senate doorkeeper not to send any more cards In to him.
