The White Star lino steamer Majestic, from New York Dec. 14 for Liverpool, just arrived here, bears evidence of having had a very tempestuous voyage. Her funnels were battered, nnd hor sides and upper works were coated with salt. The height of he sens that boarded her may bo judged from the fact that her crow's-uest, tho place on the foremast occupied by tho lookout, had beon de molished. Tho Majestic took a heavy galo on Dec. 18. A tremendous sea soon got up and tons upon tons of water boarded the steamer, causing much discomfort. Gov't Report. ABSOUUTEDf PURE DENIED BY LOVEJOY. Soy tho Onrni-glr Do Not Contemplate AVholritAle DUchnrgf-4. Prrr snuna, Deo. 22. The following de spatch has created a great sensation here, nnd despito tho denial of Secretary Iovo joy, of tho Carnegio compnny, that there is any truth in tho report, tho majority of those interviewed on tho subject, es pecially union men, say they believe such is tho case. Ono prominent labor man says ho has positive information from an insldo source that such a course has been adopted by the company. Secretary Lovcjoy, however, emphatic ally denies the statement, and says his compnny docs not, nnd never has, contem plated uny such move. Homestead, Pa., Dec. 23. Sensation was precipitated hero when it was re ported that ou Jan. 1, tho sorvico of tho men who were employed in thejmill during tho strike will be dispensed with. Whether thcro is any foundation or not for tho ro port can not bo ascertained. It is so widely circulated and so much credence Is given to it, thnt it appears to be foundod on some good authority. The statement originated from the mill men themselves. They stated that n notice had been posted in the plant, read Ing: "Tho services of the workmen who were employed in tho Carnegio Company's works during the time of tlio strlko will not bo required after Jan. 1, 1893." At the mill tho otllcials will not cither confirm or deny tho report, and no amount ol questioning or pressing induces any of the officials who were seen to commit ihcmselvcs iu the slightest degree. A number of tho non-union men who were seen, however, ns'they were coming from the restaurant, said thnt such no tices wore posted and that the men were making preparations to leave. Ono of the men said that qulto a num ber of tho employes, whilo preparing to quit, belloved that they would be re-employed, as they looked upon the matter as tin attempt on the part of the company io ?oiicillatc the old men and restore them to their former positions; they thought that tho non-union men would be given a fair trial in the general hcramblo for places which, it is reported, will occur at the first of the year. At the office of the Cnrnegics it is said that while the company will employ none but competent men, wholesale discharges are not expected. ISo otllclal denial oi the report, however, can bo obtained. A new scale will probably go into et- fect on Jan. 1, and It such a notice was posted, it is believed that it was done for the purpose of giving the old men an op portunity to apply for work under the new agreement.
