PARKHUR9T TO BYRNES. The Clergyman Ajtuln Bcori New York'i Police Superintendent." 1 ' New YonK, Dec. 1Q. Dr. Parkhttrst hat given out a statement In reply to Super intendent liynios In which he snys: "In his latest statement Jlr. Byrne! jumps from vituperation to theology. It posMblo he is a worse theologian than h Is a Police Superintendent. Tliere is such a thing as the gospel and there is HUch a thing as tho law. Both art good when kept distinct, but both are spoiled by being mixed. "Tho gospel requires us to deal leniently with sinners. Mr. Byrnes deals leniently with sin, which is another matter. His business is to take iniquity and make it execrable in tho public estimation; which is exactly what he is not doing and has not the slightest idea o( doing. "His business is to make law majestic. Ho makes It contemptible. He play with infractions of it, and, unless the Unroll grand jury were utterly at fault, ho stands nt the heud of a department that coins wealth ont of the very vices it Is consti tuted to suppress. CONVICT BURKE DEAD. lie Was Sent Up for Life for Implication in tho Cronln Murdei', Jouet, 111., Deo. 10. Martin Burke, convict No. 45, who was received here Jan. U, 1800, with Patrick O'Sullivan and Dan Coughlln for the murder of Dr. Cronln in the Carlson cottage in Chicago, died in the prison hospital last night of consumption. Ho was admitted to the hospital Sept. SO, He mudo no confession, but on the contrary protested his innocence to the last. Of the three men given life sentence for tho murder of Dr. Cronin, Daniel Cough lln is the only one now olive, Patrick O'Sullivan having succumbed to consump tion six months ago. Burke is tho 14th person connected with tho Cronin trial who has died since that famous caso ended. When tho news of his coming death was made public last month every known means was resorted to to secure a con fession which would lift tho blood-stained Curtain from tho Cronin mystery and re venl tho inner workings of tho deadly con spiracy in nil the hideous detail. Ho always maintained, however, that his sentence was an' unjust one and that it did not lie in his power to place the crime on tlio.se who should be burdened with it. Coughing Leads to CniiKinnptlon.
