GLEANER IMMIGRATION.
Public sentiment 011 the question of
foreign immigration Is crystalizing.
Iu an nildresa by diaries Emory
Smith, of the Philadelphia Press, he
says he does not sympathize with those
who saw no value in immigration of
the right kind. It is the change in
the quality of the newcomer that
alarms him. The Slavic immigration
was greater than the annual addition
of Irish to our population, one year
excepted; and tu only four years has
the German Immigration been larger
than this Slavic lullux.
Eight millions of foreigners added
to our population in twenty years is
an alarming fact, in view of the
knowledge that a great part of those
who come to us now are ignorant,
degraded and depraved. Mr. Smith
regards the imposition of a heavy
head tax as the most practicable way
of sifting out unworthy applicants for
a home in our country.
Senator William E. Chandler, of
New Hampshire, speaking of what
Congress had done and of additional
legislation that has been proposed,
says it is en 'ouraglng that all political
parties have reached a point where
they do not hesitate to express them
selves boldly against adegredation of
our national life and character by
indiscriminate immigration. The
next Congress will bo expected to ex
press iu more stringent statutes the
general sentiment of the nation on
the subject.
For the first time in her history
Pennsylvania cast 1,000,000 votes.
The actual number was 1,003,005. Of
these Harrison received 510,011; Cleve
land, 452,264; the Prohibition candi.
date and Gen. Weaver the remainder.
The Republican vote fell of! about 10
000, and the Prohibition and Populist
votes were each Increased about r,000,
while the Democratic vote was 00,000
more than In 1883.
A DISGRACE.
Not satisfied with desecrating the
tomb-stones on the graves of Union
soldiers, the miscreant Copperheads of
Indiana are resorting to other out
rages to show their hatred of every
thine Republican. Shortly before
election a syndicateof capitalists erect
cd a tiuplate mill at Andersen, which
gave employment to more than a
hundred skilled and high-priced
workmen. Immediately after the
completion of the plant the mill was
worked day and night to keep up
with orders. Tin was being made ata
profit of three dollars a box and so
) rosperous did tho business promise to
become that the managers expected to
clear $.'0,000 the first year. Such pros
perity of an industry made possl
bio only by Republican legislation
was too much for the Knights ot the
Golden Circle, who have Just burned
the mill to the grouud. In view of
the avowed purposes of the Democrat
ic party, aud the several previous
attempts made to destroy the plant,
tho owners will not rebuild. Con
siderlng the fact that the scoundrels
who painted the headstones on tho
soldiers graves still go unpunished,
there seems to be but little hope that
they will be brought to justice for
this later crlmo. Acommuuity which
tolerates such members Is a disgrace
to the country at large.

The preparation that can be taken with

called scientific. Such a preparation wns
discovered by Dr. David Kennedy and
named Favorito Hemedy. It is proscribed
and recommended the world over, by tho
medical profession, as tho best medicine
produced for the cure of all diseases

London, Not. 80. Joseph Mellor haa
been sentenced to death by n Manchester
court for having murdered his wife early
n September. He has written a letter
the effect that Lizzie Sunderland, a
young unmarried woman, plotted the
murder with him in order that he might
be free to niHrry her.
This case, known as the Oldham mur
der, has excited widespread interest in
En eland on account of the blood thirst 1
ness of Mellor's conduct. Mrs. Mellor
disappeared early in September mid Mel
lor told inquiring neighbors that she had
gone to so.) her ill mother.
His story was received with suspicion,
which grew as the weeks passed und his
wife failed to return.
On Dec. 18 a woman looked through
the kitchen window of Mellor's house
while Mellor was out, and saw a hole in
the floor.
She called the landlord, and he broke
n tho door. He found the hole to be six
feet ions aud three foet wide, and par
tially filled with bloody clothing.
Under a stairway ho found Mrs. Mellor a
body and a blood-stained butcher knife.
Her wounds showed that she had been
stabbed in the mouth, breast, and stom
ach, that her wiudpipo had been cut,
and that her hoad had been beaten with
club.
When arrested Mellor gave no moti ve
for the crlmo, and none has been ascer
tained except the one suggested by the
letter mentioned above.
SPANISH CABINET CRISIS.
MiguiaiiucjeiUMiit of Columbus Fete Funds
Ui Cnutn of Contention.
Madrid, Nov. 30. The Cabinet Coun
cil brought to light irrecoucilnble divis
ions among the Ministers. Tho subject
ot contention is tho prosecution of ths
municipal authorities for corruption in
tho management of funds for the Colum
bus fetes.
The misappropriation of funds has been
virtually proved. The Governor of the
city, who is most deeply involved, is
known to nave conducted every part o i
the arrangements which ho touched solely
to till his own pockots.
Large sums which wero to be expended
on the fetes are said to have been squand
ered npou editors and correspondents lu
order that they might bo itiduced to
hold their peace as to his dishonesty.
There it a strong popular demand (or
investigation and prosecution, iu which
three Ministers concur. Tho other Min
isters fear the consequences for the
Cabinet and tho popular tumult which
tho revelations would probably provoke.
A crisis is regarded as Imminent.
