EARTHQUAKE IN SALVADOR.

letter from La Union, Salvador, gives
details of tho complete destruction o!
that city by an earthquake. Tho letter
was received yesterday by the steamer
City ot Sydney, from Panitma. It sayst
"Au eurthttuako laid low nearly all
the housos iu the city, and those left
standing had their walls so cracked that
it was not safe to remain in thorn. The
residence of the agent of the Pacifio Moil
company, which was comparatively new
and supposed to us eartnquaUe-proof,
wad shattered by the shock. The peopl
are living in tents, and ara in mortal fear
of another disturbance."
A passenger on the City of Panama,
which called ut La Union on the trip, and
which was subsequently passed by tn
City of Sydney, write that h went
ashore and visited the ruins. The deso
lation "was complete. The residents of
the city were almost driven to frenzy,
and processions were parading tho streets
ringing bells and headed by the priests,
who prayed aloud to God to abate the
disturbances.

burning of the Vunderbllt villa, cottagers
who yet remain here are preparing to
demand that a lire station be built in the
midst ot the cottages and that it be
equipped with a hook and ladder truck, a

permanent men.
