After March 4 the wages of every workman should go up. That la tht Democratic promise. Mil. CLEYKLAFD will bo indepil tin grateful If ho does not recognize the solid South. It did it. It takes lots of time aud several million of votes to elect presidents these days, but tho people must havo them. Shall immlgratlou bo restricted? This Is one of the great problems Mr. Cleveland aud lila Administration will have to Bolve. Jv the Democrats see anything more that they want, we hope they will not bo too modest to ask for it. A hot stove, for Instance. If tho Democratic psrty brings about au industrial panicln this coun try it will be dilveu from power, and tho twentieth century will be well ad vanced before it regains it. If tho new comet strikes tho earth we shall doubtless hear Lieutenant Totten ten minutes after the instant of contact, claimiugthnt it was merely the fulfilling of his millennium pro phesies. Theke will be a graud reunion in Washington ou the fourth of March of men who held olllce during Cleve land's administration. A full turnout is expected, uud those who desire to attend should go early aud avoid tho rush. Which is better : For the farmers to leave their farms aud go temporarily to overemployments in dull times, or for the mill operatives to leave their mills and go permanently to farming? Would the farmer be benefitted by the consequent incieaBe of competition andtholossof consumers? Anything tending to check manufacturer would brlug'aboutthls condition. Many of the free trade organs. which all through the recent cam paign shouted "Itepeul the MoKinley law," are uow begging the victorious Democracy for goijduess' sake to "go slow" and to "lot well enough alone.' It will require a judicial investigation to determine whether these zealous free tinde howlers were hypocrites during the campaign or whether they are merely cowards now. Adopt the polioy of Free-Trade, close up the American mills, oiler Kuropo 3,000,000 more bales of cotton than she is prepared to manufacture, nnd the staple will go; down and re' main there until mills can be built in Europe to work it up. Your pormltv tlou of operatives will follow the mills and the diversified products of you farms will ceoso to have a market, Instead of bringing ' to America 200 dollars for the manufactured product of a bale of cotton you will bring 25 dollars for the raw material, aud thereby contribute to the payment of foreign labor, neglecting your own tind assuring the balance of trad against the United States. Ciiicaoo, Nov. 21. Tho later nnunls ol Chicago can record no more horriblt crime nor one accompanied by mora sen sational details than that which brought death into a two-story frame cottnga in the northwestern part of this city last evening. By the acts of a man, who is said by some to be insane, a double mur der was committed, two people sorlously if not fatally wounded and the murderer narrowly escaped violence at the hands of a thousand citizens who live near the scene of tho tragedy. Herman tSeigler, a German, lived with his wifo and three children at tho rosl donee of his wife's parents, Henry and Caroline Siles on Paulina street. Noth ing unusual was noticed in his notions until yesterday afternoon, when, gun in hand, he entered tho parlor whero his wifo nnd children ware. One of tho little ones saw him first and began to scream. , Mrs." Slles, the mother-ln-lnw, hurried into tho room uud ns she entered Siegler attempted to elevate the gun as though ho intended to shoot her. -fahe rushed up to him nnd throwing her arms about his neck, tried to take tho guu from him. Ila pushed the nged woman aside violently, then he raised tho shot guu and pointing the barrel almost directly against her leit breast, llrcd boiore sua could ollor any resistance. She sank to the iloor dead. Mrs. Siegler, in tho meantime, had carried the children to the house of a neighbor, nnd on returning encountered her hus band, who fired at her, several of the shot taking effect In her neck nnd breast. Tho noiso down stairs aroused Mr. Siles, and ho descended into the hallway. As lin stepped Irom tue lower step Siegler met him. Again raising the guu, which ho had previously reloaded, he fired. Mr. Siles received tho full chargo at close range. It is believed that biegler then dis charged the other barrol of nis guu in his father-in-law's faoe, for portions of his neck and right cheek were torn away. By this time a crowd had gathered out side, uud ns Officer Slmonson camo up siegler appeared in tue uoorway. me neople fell bucK, and as tne oiucer drew his revolver ho ordered Siegler to surren der. The hitter's reply was i shot from his gun, but ho shot high. Slmonson re turned the fire, nnd Siegler staggered back with a bullet In his sido. He suc ceeded in firing another shot, which sliuhtlv wounded tho officer, before he was overnowerod. As Slogler was being taken to tno nutrol wagon thiouts of violence were heard on every hand nnd a number ot re volvers wore drawn by citizens who were uuxlous to get hole of tho murderer.' Heneatedly Siegler was struck by men whoso interference could not bo prevented by the police. Siegler was at last placed in tue wagon and tho hores were whipped into a gal lon. At the station he made a statement winch was short, incoherent and indica tive of insanity. Ho was afterwards taken to the Hospital. Tho oxtent of his wounds is not known. NOT BIELA'S COMET.
