THE COURT DIRECTS A VERDICT
A Most Unsavory Caso Brought
to a Conclusion Yesterday at
tho Pottsvillo Court A
Weak Caso Presented
EVI DORNSIFE,ofthls
town, was yesterday ac
quitted at the Pottsvillo
court of a most sovcro
cbargo preferred by his
daughter, Cora. The
acquittal was mailo by
direction of tho court
after the prosecution closed Its caso.
Dornsife was charged by his daughter with
incest and statutory rape. When the caso
was first brought to tho notico of tho public
feeling ran high against the accused, but the
developments at tho trial yesterday wero of
such a character that tho prosecution fell flat,
Cora Domslfo charged that her i'athor
ruined her. Tho father alleged that he was
a victim of a conspiracy and his friends
say that tho object of the conspiracy was to
gain certain property tho accused owned.
Tho testimony given at tho preliminary
hearing of tho caso was of a most revolting
character.
There is a prevailing opinion that In view
of tho acquittal tho prosecuting daughter
should bo sent to a reformatory.

Editor Herald: Applicants reappoint
ments as letter carriers are now becoming
znoro numerous than llics in summer. Can
it be possible that that department Is In need
of a change and that tho present frco de
livery system Is a failure, or do people nieroly
sign petitions to get rid of tho applicants?
It Is a reflection upon our present admirable
service to say the least and disinterested
people llko myself look upon tho matter In
that light. I think tho people ought to bo
proud of tho servico nnd the carriers. They
try to do their duty and havQ given entire
satisfaction, A change in tho force will
bring a crude servico that will require months
of work for perfection and for that reason I
think tho political zeal exhibited by some
peoplo in connection with tho position is un
warranted. Let tho carriers alono. Tho
force is an efficient ono and it should be up
held. L.

Robert Brltton, of Gllbeiton, shot himself
In tho forehead with suicidal Intent, ou
Wednesday ovcnlng. It appears from tho
slory gleaned by n Hkkald reporter, who
visited tho place to-day, that Britton 1ms
been despondent for a long time on account
of troublos in tbo family, and brooded over
it so much that in a fit of temporary insanity
ho fired the shot that may yet prove fatal.
At tho tlmo of the shooting Britton was up
stairs, and the only other person on tho
premises was his 13-year-old boy who was
down stairs, lying on tho lounge. Mrs.
Britton and tho rest of tho family wero at a
neighbor's. About 8 o'clock the boy heard a
shot up stairs, and becoming alarmed, rushed
to the stairway, where ho met his father
coming down with the blood streaming from
a wound on his forehead, llo Immediately
gave the alarm and in a few moments tho
houso was filled with friends and neighbors.
Dr. Glllars was called in and did all in his
power to relievo the wounded man. Ho was
resting nicely this morning and tharo are
hopes of his recovery. Britton was in Europo

l'ollllcul BuBgi'stlon,
Editoh Herald ; Permit mo to make a
fow suggestions lu tho interest of good local
govornment, which will bo before the jiooplo
within the next three months. My idea Is
that the Citizens' party should be recon
structed and improved so that it shall bo
what it was when originated. The party
started out all right and by good management
four of the live wurds of tho town were
brought into tho ranks of good, honest, im
partial government. This result can bo ac
complished again with iproper management.
The best men of the town, regardless of
political affiliations, should be selected as
candidates and the ticket should be arranged
so that it would command (he support of all
fair-minded men. As the Citizens' party is
to-day it is a traitor to tho principles upon
which It was founded. It is good for but
two things a tool in tho hands of designing
Democrats and a wedge of self interest by a
few gluttonlsh Republicans. It has degen
erated to a stage that Is beneath tho consider
ation of Intelligent and respectable men of
either tho Republican or Democratic party.
When the Citizens' party had such men as

was quite a
serious accident at
Packer Junction, near
Lost Creek, this morn
ing. Tho Junction is
tho point where the
Philadelphia and Read
ing trains switch from
tho Lehigh Valley tracks to cross over to tho
old P. i R. tracks.
The accident was in tho shape of a col
lision between a P. & R. passenger train and
a Lehigh Valley shifting engine. Tho rear
car was toppled over an embankment. The
members of tho "Lost in London " theatrical
company wero in tho car and were pretty
badly shaken up, but only ono of them, Miss
Lora Addison Cleft, required medical attend
ance. The lady's injuries wero not serious.
She was brought to town and is quartered at
tho Ferguson Houso with tho other members
of tho company. Miss Cleft is slightly
bruised about tho head and face, but sho will
not bo able to appear at tho performance this
ovening. Dr. Hamilton is attending her.
Miss Prltchard, who is a traveling sales
lady for a Philadelphia book firm, was also an
occupant of tho overturned car, but as in tho
caso of Miss Cleft, her injuries wero slight.
Miss Prltchard was also taken to tho Fergu
son House.
No explanation of tho cause of the acci
dent has been obtained. It appears that tho
shifting engine and train approached tho
Junction at a lively rate of speed and there
was an absence of signal arrangements.
The shifting engine and the car that went
over tho embankment wero badly damaged.
