.The New York Jleoorder says it
suits Mr. Cleveland's present purpose
to rub the fur of the Ttimmauy Tiger
the right way, to the end that that
Tinhln nnlmal mav he induced to do
its Presidential purring in his behalf.
Yet In times past he has not loved
Tammany, nor has Tammany loved
him.
Tammany represents for Mr. Cleve
land the collective force of the Irish
American voters of his party, and the
Irish-American voter is Mr. Cleve
land's particular and empuatio aver
alon. The Individuality of Mr. Cleve
land would be comparatively colorless
hut for his antipathy to the Irish
American citizen aud the Union vet
eran; aud of these two the Irish
American citizen is undoubtedly most
obnoxious to him.
Campaign protestations of friend
ship to the Irish race aud of sympathy
with the cause of Home Rule are, of
course, part of the Democratic stock
in-trade. But actions Bpeak louder
thuu words, aud Mr. Cleveland has
had one administration already in
which the Irish-American Demo
crats were given nothing but back
seats, nud not a great inauy of those.
But long before Mr. Cleveland be
came President he had made a record
for himself in this matter which can
never be wiped out. In our own
new columns this morulng we print
the story of how Mr. Cleveland treated
John C. Bheehan, now police commis
sioner of this city ami and brother of
the Lieutenant-Governor of this state,
tn tue year lboi. Mr. blieelian was
nominated for Controller of the city of
Buflalo iu that year. When that fact
was made known to Mr. Cleveland ho
refused to accept the nomination for
Mayor ol Buflalo, and gave as his
reason that he would not go upon the
ticket "with that d d Irishman."
This is not a matter of hearsay or
rumor; It Is eworn to by Mr. Edwin O,
Bobbins, a reputable citizen of Buflalo
In whose presence Mr. Cleveland gave
his extremely candid, not to say bru
tal, oplulou of Irish-American fellow
Democrat. Mr Cleveland had the
.satisfaction, too of forcing Mr, Bhee
hau oil the ticket and running for
Mayor of Buflalo uucontamlnated by
asoolatlou w,ith "that d d Irish
man."
Democrats of Irish birth and descent
)iav) made no mistake in classing Mr.
Cleveland as one of the Democratic
leaders who have no uso for them ex
cept on election day. He was not
willing to have one of them on the
same city ticket with him In Bullalo,
.and he was not willing to give them
any places In bis gift as President
which he could find any pretext for
giving to Democrats of hie own autl
Irish proollvltlee.

PISTOLS IN THE PULPIT
How Maniac Emmons Kept t

NARROW ESCAPE OF AN OFFICER-
Hurt Won the It'utk.
Chicago, Oct. 24. Hart of Boston won
tho six days go-ns-you-pleaso walking
natch which ended at 10 o'clock last
light with a record of 479 1-2 miles.
Joore finished with 47G 3-4 miles to his

has been brought about by the
introduction of Cottolene, the
new vegetable shortening. The
discovery of this product, and the
demonstration of its remarkable
qualities, has attracted the widest
interest. Hitherto the common
shortening has been lard, or
indifferent butter. Every one has
probably suffered occasional dis
comfort from lard-cooked food ;
while it is well known that thous
ands are obliged to abstainentire
ly from everything of that kind.
To such people, Cottolene is of
peculiar value, widening as it
does, the range of what may be
eaten and enjoyed. Cottolene
is a cooking marvel. It combines
with the food imparts to it a
tempting color, a delicate flavor,
and an appetizing crispness.
No trace of greasiness remains
to offend the taste, or disturb the
digestion.
Cottolene is worthy of the
careful notice of all those who
value good food, of itself or for
its hygienic properties.

SrRiNOHKr.D, Mass., Oct. 24. It 1
probable that Charles M. Emmons, after
his crazy doings of yesterday, will now
be put where he can make no mor
trouble.
The spectacle of a wild-eyed man stand
ing in tho pulpit of Olivet Congregational
Church, with a cocked revolver in hi!
right hand and another lying on tho pul
pit, greeted the early arrivals at thai
church yesterday morning. The pastor,
Rev. L. A. Cone, had exchanged with L.
H. Dorchester, anothor city pastor, but
Rev. Mr. Dorchester was not able to get
into the pulpit, as the madman held It
against all comors at tho muzzlo of hii
revolver.
He was Charles M. Emmons, a member
of the church, and an employe of thi
government at the United States Armory.
Emmons gained admittance to the church
nt an early hour, and had his position
well fortified before auy one else arrived.
Around bis body ho had wrappod a sofa
cover and had a black veil over his
head and face. The janitor triod to eject
him, but as he approached the pulpit the
madman lired threo shots In rapid suc
cession. All of them lodged iu the
ceiling.
In the meantime tho congregation had
begun to arrive, and tho news spread
throughout tho city. In loss than fifteen
minutes the church hud a congregation
larger than ever iu its history, but all
kept at a respectful distance from the
lunatic's gun.
Then the janitor, reinforced by Deacon
Adams, other church members, aud four
policemen, re-entered the church, but
they were unable to capture the pulpit.
Luiuious, a revolver iu eaen nnuil, warned.
them not to advance.
Come a step nearer and I will shoot,"
he said.
Several parsons who know blm tried to
persuade him to leave the pulpit, hut he
nswereil their entreaties by pointing his
revolvers at their heads and warning
them to retire. The police attempted in
various wuys to attract the attention of
the crazed man, when it was planned to
rush upon and overpower him. Rut this
was only the signal lor more suootln,
two bullets crazing the helmet of the of
ficer who made the attempt.
The olucers then held a council, and 1
was decided that, as Emmons was so well
armed, It would be more prudeutto await
evouts.
Emmons held the fort until after
o'clock, when he fell asleep In his chair.
Then Detective Atkins ana Patrolmau
Hnynes crept carefully up to the plat
form and pounced upon him. Emmons
struggled desperately but was soon over
powered, disarmed and liiiiulcullod. As
they started for the police station Env
mous begged hard to be allowed to put
ou his overcoat. The handcuffs were
taken off for this purpose and before he
could be prevented the madman brought
out another revolver anu .rou again, out
hit no one.
At the police station Emmons claimed
that he had beeu hounded by enemies for
twenty years and hud written a sermon
entitled "The Truth," which he had asked
Pastor Cone to preach. Mr. Coue had re
fused and be had determined to tako
possession of the pulpit and preach It
himself.
Emmons has shown tlgns of insanity
for several weeks, but was not considered
dangerous. He created a scene at Trinity
Church last Sunday, when he entered the
pulpit, Bat down and removed his shoes,
ut tho same timo ordering all others to do
the same, as they were ou holy grouud.
Ho was removed without auy trouble and
the affair was kept quiet, lie had a well
worn copy of the IJible and the neatly
written manuscript of his sermon when
captured.
