THE CHRISTIAN ENDEAVOR.
Delegates Prom All Parts of the County
Hero.
Tho fall convention of the Christian
Endeavor Societies of this county is now
being held in this town. Up to this morning
ono hundred and twenty delegates had
reported, hut many moro wero enrolled
during the day.
The convention opened in thoFresbyteriau
church yesterday, at 1:30 p. m., by prniso
service under the direction of !ev. J. C.
Kranso, of l'ottsville. Tho balance of tho
session was taken up by routlno business.
Tho evening session opened at .7:30 o'clock
with praise service by Prof. E. D. Ileddall, of
town.
l!ov. William McNnlly then delivered an
address of welcome to the delegates, lie
spoko in his usual cordial and witty manner
anil made tho visitors feel at homo. Tho ad
dross was gracefully responded to by Mr. C.
SJllimaii, Jr., of l'ottsville.
After singing by tho united choirs tho
president of tlie.convcntlon, Mr. Brown, of
Malianoy City, read tho scriptures and Hoy,
Zimmerman, of Mahanoy City, led in prayer.
Tho principal featuro of the evening's pro
gramme was an address by itcv. it. M.
liuchanan, pastor of the Mauch Chunk Pres.
hyteriau church, on "Faith and Facts." Ho
said that we can have faith only as wo have
facts. Tho facts are found in the Word. Wo
must appeal to them and accept their veracity
iu order to havo genuino faith. An appeal
to the facts of scripturo will uphold us in
the hour when tempted, to doubt tho vital
truths of our religion. Tho speaker further
asserted tliat an appeal to experience was
essential to strengthen faith. Tho address
was eloquent and pointed throughout. It
was a most interesting and profitable address
from beginning to end and must havo proved
a great blessing to tho work ot tho Christian
Endeavor.
At tho close of Rev. Buchanan's address a
social hour was spent in the reception of dole
gates. Tho Primitive. Methodist, Presby
terian and Evangelical choirs and several
members of the societies entertained tho
laige audience Tho church was crowded to
its utmost capacity.
JIOP.NINO SESSION.
The first service In connection with tho
convention to-day was a morning prayer
meeting at 7 o'clock. Moic than ono hun
dred roreons attended this early meeting,
which was lod by Kev. E. Itomig, of Frack-
vllle.
At 0 a. m. tho first session was held. After
season ot praise and prayer conducted by
Itov. Mr. Marguardt, of Tainanua, the first
address was by Rev. J. P. Zimmerman, of
Mahanoy City, on tho subject of "How to
Embrace Christian Endeavor Work." The
address was practical, ptofitable and stirring,
and was attentively listened to by all
present,
Short reports from each society in the
county wero then given and somo good
special features in Christian Endeavor work
were reported. Tho entire Union of Schuyl'
kill number over 2,000 members and tho
work is progressing all along tho line.
Many societies havo organized junior
Christian Endeavor societies and report that
this now feature is doing moro good for
Christ and the church than any other featuro
f the society.
Special work was also reported on mission
ary linos.
Mr. W. K. Woodbury, of Pottsville, gave
an address on " Relation of the Christian
Endeavor Society to the Conversion of tho
World." Tho necessity of the hand to hand
work was fiist emphasized. The needs of
China and India wero dwelt upon and tho
cry from thiso couutriis for moro help
was pictured. Tho speaker then dwelt on
the foreign clement within our own
borders and showed tho need of foreign
mission work in America, First, Tho com
prehensiveness or area of tho work; second,
What has been accomplished; third, Our
relation as a Christian Endeavor Society wero
the heads under which ' the subject wa3
discussed. A series of diagrams used by the
speaker were useful in enforcing the truths
enunciated. The fulfillment of tho pro
phecies iu tho Restoration of Israel was
dwelt upon and used as an incentive to
energetic work fur Christ and his church in
tho field of missions. Tho good work among
tho frcedmen of the South enthused every
heart. Twenty-seven years ago a negro was
forbidden by law to learn to read. What
havo we now? 2,500,000 can read 1 20,000
teachers, GO academies, 1,000 college-bred
ministers, 750 doctors, 250 in universities of
Europe and the negroes of this country own
$2(11,000,000 of property.
Miss Esther Nowlin, of Port Carbon, read
an interesting paper on "How to maintain an
interest iu tho work of our societies." Wo
regret that space forbids an extended report
of this paper. It was well prepared, wejl
read uuil well received by the convention.
Miss Newlin is an intelligent, practical young
lady, and will bo gladly heard again.
The convention will close this evening.
