There are thirty-six Christian Endeavor
societies in Schuylkill county and they are

Methodist Episcopal and English and German
Lutheran churches of Ashland; Evangelical
Frackvillej First Presbyterian, English
Lutheran, Evangelical and Welsh Congre
gational, Mahanoy City, First and Second
Presbyterian, Evangelical, Olivet Baptist,
Methodist Episcopal, Trinity Reformed, First
Reformed, First Baptist and English Luth
cran, l'ottsvinej first rroioyicrian, i.uui
cran and Evangelical, Port Carbon ; Moth
odist Episcopal and Evangelical, Pine Grovo;
Methodist Episcopal, St. Clrir; Lutheran,
Delano; Methodist, Mahanoy Piano; Pres

It will bo seen from tho abovo that nine
different denominations aro represented, but
thero arc scores of young people's societies in
the county not in connection with tho
Christian Endeavor movement. They ore
denominational in character, while tho
Christian Endeavor is inter-denominational
But tho object is one and party linos might
bo obliterated without much injury, but
with a good deal of profit. All tho sessions
of tho conventions will bo open to tho public.
Qr..v. Sickles said that it was hard enough
to vote onco for a man who had sent a sub
stitute. Ho could not bring himself to vote
for two men who had both sent substitutes.
THE SOAROITY OF WATER.

John A. Titman informs tho Herald that
thoro is very little water In tho Catawlssa
l alley and that ho cannot get a sufficient
supply to run his powder mill.
The discouraging reportB also affect tho
streams from which tho joint committeo ex
pects to secure its supply in caso tho new
water works aro established. They havo
been very low nearly all summer and are
now almost dry.
Mahanoy City and Ashland aro still suffer
ing from tho drouth. They aro still on an
allowanco of two hours per day nnd water
has become a luxury lu tho eyes of the peo
ple.
Mcanwhilo Shenandoah is envied for her
supply of twelve hours per day. Tho dams
are holding their own and occasionally creep
up a little, hut thero is no margin for reck
less uso of tho supply.
Under Davo Martin's leadership tho
Republicans of Philadelphia always won hlg
victories. Recognizing his worth asatroined
leader and organizer ho was called to New
York. His work is beginning to toll.
LITTLE LOOALS

Borough Council will bo interesting.
Tho school children aro steadily practicing
marching for Columbus day.

luge crowd going to Bloomsburg to-morrow
to attend tho fair.

nomination for tho Judgeship made by the
Democratic county convention aro working
day and night to promoto tho interests of
Hon. John W. Ryon. Meetings are being
held nightly in different parts of tho county
and tho attendances aro largo and enthu
siastic. Among tho speakers who aro prom
inent In tho campaign are J. 0. Ulrick, Esq.,
J. F. Dolphin, Esq., G. W. Ryon, Esq., W. F.
Shepherd, Esq., J. W. Moyer, Esq., and tho
candidate. To the list of speakers has been
added Editor John E. Doyle, of tho Sunday
iWies. Mr. Doylo will speak at Lost Creek
on tho 22nd Inst.; Wm. Pcnn on tho 21th,
and Rappahannock on tho 25th. Messrs.
Dennis J. and Michael E. Doyle have not yet
been assigned.

Dauphin county, where thoy spent three
days visiting friends.

town yesterday complaining that business

This morning one ot
tho assailants was sent to Pottsvillo in de
fault of $300 hall. Another gave bonds for
his appearance. Tho other two arc missing,
Tho Hylands wero terribly beaten and
their scalps and faces Bhow tho terriblo effects
of blows from pieces of rock. Ono of them
will not bo ablo to work for a week at loast
and tho othor may be obliged to remain idlo
for a much longer timo. Tho victims are of
tcmpcrato habits and aro highly spoken of
by their neighbors.
Tho story told by tho young men is this :
They wero returning to town Sunday oven
ing from Yatesvlllo, whero they had been
isiting their brother-in-law, and when near
ndian Ridge breaker they mot four Hun
ganans named Michael itanisu, jiartin
Ranchick, Andrew Horwot and Stcvo
Howrena. Ono of the Huns jostled the
Hylands and when they remonstrated tho
four Huns opened up the Dght.
Tho Huns wero intoxicated, having just
left a christonlug in Francy's row, and they
fought desperately, but the Hylands say they
had tho upper hand of tho battle until tho
Huns resorted to throwing tho pieces of
rock. " Had wo been drunk, too" said ono
of tho Hyland's to-day, " I believe wo would
not bo alive to-day."
'Squiro Monaghan issued warrants and
Constable Toomey, Patrick Devers and James
Cook 6tarted out to execute them. They ar
rested Banish and Ranchick at tho Knicker
bocker colliery and then returned for tho
other two. Horwot and Howrena saw the
officers returning and ran away. Thoy aro
still missing and aro supposed to bo hiding oil
the mountain north of Yatesvlllo.
Friends of tho Hungarians havo been try'
ing to settle tho case by offering to pay tho
costs of all suits and the doctor bills tho
Hylands have incurred.

There was quite a number of delegates
present. Tho condition of tho several

ing a public meeting was held and addresses
were delivered by Rev. W. F. Nieholls, of
Hazleton, and Rov. C. Prosscr.of Mt. Carmel.
There was a vory fair attendance Tho
general coinmittoe of tho Pennsylvania
Conference met to-day in tho P. M. church at
Mahanoy City. Members from tho castorn
and western Pennsylvania districts aro in
attendance and very important business is
being transacted.

Democratic Club has brought out the state
ment that there is a spilt in the ranks of the
First ward Democrat. Mr. Patrick Graham,
superintendent of transportation of ex.-
pressago at the depot, said to-day, "Yes,
that's true a number of us havo kicked
against 'Squire Monaghan's organization."
' What was the cause of the kick ?"
' Wo wanted to have something to tayiu
the campaign and 'Squire Jack and us
couldn't pull together."
" What is the ticket of your club ?"
"Well, wo are independent. Koch Is Our

Tho peoplo here are anxiously awaiting the

Tho scarcity of water is keenly felt here as
it is elsewhere. Ruin is wonted badly.

A lunch basket party was held at the
residence of W. J. Jacobs, on West Oak street,
last evening, tho proceeds of which are
for tho benefit of All Saints' P. E. cnurch.
Tho houso was beautifully decorated, and
quite a nice sum was realized for the church.
All present spent a pleasant evening by par
ticipating in tho varied forms of amusement
offered by their host and hostess, and were
nnaninioui in voting Mr. and Mrs. Jacobj
excellent entertainers. Among those present

appreciated. Miss Merll is a finished actress,
and has few equals on tho stage. She is
superbly supported by such talented people

and Scott. It is seldom that a better com
