INDIANS CELEBRATING.
A Philadelphia contemporary says
it Is all well enough to swell the pro
cession in cooimeniorutlon of th e discov
ery of America by Columbus by march
ing the Indian boys and girls of the
Government Bahool at Carlisle in the
paceant. Hut if those lads and Ins-
Hen knew much about what thedls'
covery of America meant to their
forbears we can imagine their thoughts
asthoy tramp along the route. The
Amerlcuu Indian hasnever felt very
proud of being discovered by either
the Spanish or English adventurers,
nor do we groatly blame him. The
most that wo can say for him Is that
when the early buccaneers found the
new world the Indians lost It.
And now we assemble the great
great-great grandchildren of the abor
iginal owners of the hemisphere aud
ask them to celebrate tho loss of tho
continent to their forbears and them
selves I It Is indeed one of those iron
ies of fate that seem to subtend the
angle of human progress, and we
are not so sure that Powhatan, Sain-
oset, TJncas, Mlantonomah, Phlllp;
Red Jacket, Tecumseh or Logan, if
living aud virile, as ouce they were.
would march In that stately pageant
They had an eye to the bearings of
niobt things, and thoughvholly illit
erate, could read and translate the
handwriting on the wall. They
might say, were they hero and aked
to celebrate their subjugation and dig'
pwsioni "Yei, wo tee that the white
man if great aud powerful; that he
hits filled the land with allies and
villages, that he lint great ships on the
and many warriors, great guns
and groat forts, and great store of
wampum; wo seo all this aud that it
makes his heart glad: but what of the
red man and where Is he ? How ?
Perhaps some of the brown-faced lads
and lasses may have "had some such

aud a strain of eiuluess may have min
gled with their rejolclug.

Col. Smith, in an interview, states that
he has made an official report ot what hat

that policemen are still under orders to
particularly look out for and prevent any
further manifestation of violence toward
the American Vice-Consul, hut no
further trouble, ho thought, would tako
place.
The French press is muto on the sub

Smith's charges. The Eogliah newspa

editorially, and demand the Vice-Consul's
recall.
Tho "Witness" says: "One sentence
in Vico-Consul Smith's report upon tho

falsehood. It gives the spirit ot the
whole document a malicious tenor. He
described tho cholera as riding at anchor
upon our seaboard. There has not been
n case of it in Canadian waters, and, on
tho other hand, it has hud its home both
at anchor and on shore in the jurisdic

"Tho dignified proceeding for Three

many people because but
few articles of food agree

Every one interested in
