A subscriber would like to know,
and we share his curiosity, the origin
and meaning of the general prevail
ing custom of oystermeu, of decorating
exposed piles of oysters and oyster
bags with stalks of endive, surmount
ed by red peppers. It may be for the
purpose of giving the bivalves a fresher
appearance, but evidently It cannot
be because there is any connection or
natural relation between the vegeta
bles and the shell fish.
TTirE Eenubllcaus of this district
must not allow themselves to be mis
led by the quietness of the campaign
and forget that they have a candidate
in the field for the Legislature. In
their candidate they have a sincere
and straightforward Republican and
a man who is fitted in all respects to
the position for which he aspires.
One of the most important positions
in the state is that of a representative
in the state LeeUlature. and in the
selection of a man to fill such a posi
tion the people should exercise great
nare. Sueli positions, we fear, are
treated too indifferently by the people,
who thereby make themselves respon
sible for the miscarriages of state ad
ministrations so frequently
plained of. If the people make a good
legislature they can remedy many
evils and effect mauy good works,
It rests with them. To do their share
the people of this district should elect

WHjD-OA-T BANK DAYS.
It appears that in tho good
old
Democratic days of "wildcat"
and
"reddog" bank notes, pensioners and
other creditors of the Government
were compelled to receive their dues in
the depreciated and often uncurrent
and worthless paper money Issued by
ttate banks. Following is a copy of
an official letter written by the United
States pension agent at Cleveland
Ohio, to a pensioner in Michigan
which copy was furnished to a Tribune
correspondent . by Deputy Commis
fioner Davidson, of the Pension
Bureau:
TTnlted Ht&tos Pension Airencv.
Cleveland, Ohio, October 17, 1857.
To Lester Iluyck, esq.:
Sir: Uneiobod Una 823. 00 Michigan money
and W cents In letter stamps, It being your
pension, lues 01 cents of! lor attorney, postage
and receipt. Also enclosed a blank for draw
ing jour peaslou next time.
I WiDMMfidadraft on New York (or tho
reason that nouels to be got. The best I could
do was to send you Michigan money, which I
hope will go In Michigan. Respectfully,
K. HEHHKNMULLEIt,
1'enslou Agent.
This letter was written about soven
uxiabs alter the lnaguration ofPrea
luent Buchanan, and in a month
whtu udImss than 1,600 hauks failed,
according to the alitor of "Thomson's
Bank-Koto Reporter." With banks
bursting at the rote of ilfty a day, the
agent of the United States Govern
went, charged with the duty of pay
ing pensioners at Cleveland, Ohio,
was compelled to write to the beiiell
uinrlcs of the Govorumunt that Now
York excluuigo "la not to bo got" and
to express the "hope" that Michigan
luonoy, which win the last he could
obtain, "will go In Michigan."
What would a pensioner of tho United
States to-day think and euy if he
should receive such a'lotter with such
inclosures, in lieu of the quarterly
payment due him. Of course, It must
be assumed that Pension Agent lies
sonmuller was an honest man, and yet,
tis the discount on Michigan bank
notes outside that state in October,
1857, ranged from 6 to 15 and 2) per cenl
ho might have ea-ily compelled the
Michigan pensioners to stand a hand
some "thavo" by buying Michigan
D0t(s at the regular Cleveland niarftel
rate of discount. If exchange on
New York could have been obtained l.t
would have cost the Michigan pen-
loner about 10 per cent premium,
which With the other expenses noted
In the pension agent's letter, would
have reduced Its quarterly pension of
2 to $21.05.
Such was the beautiful system of
banking to which the Democratic
party In the year 1892 demands that
the country shall return.
