It has been evident for tue past week
from the hue and cry the Democratic

Mr. David Martlu, Mr. Quay and Mr.

It Is an old dodge, well known among

Buffalo, N. Y., Oct. 4. Tho death' ot
tho notorious defaultci Edward S. Daun
last evening, has croatod a sensation here, I
and the generally accepted theory as to
the nature of tho mysterious illness is
that ho committal suicide, taking a
heavy dose of morphine or some otlier
poison. Tho physicians who ntteuded 1
him doclare, on tho contrary, their
belief that ho suffered a stroke of apo
plexy, and confidently predict that the
post-mortem examination will confirm
tholr theory.
D.inn died at 7 o'clock. Ho was pro
foundly unconscious at the time of his--1
death, having been in that condition for
40 hours, the attack occurring on Satur
day evening at 0 o'clock. '
Edward S. Dann stood, high in church
and social circles. When the bank ex
aminers found that there was a shortage'
in tbe accounts of tbe bank and recom
mended tho arrest of the trusted secre
' tary and treasurer, the trustees could not
believe that the examiners were right in
their conclusions. They had trusted him
implicitly for over 0 years over since
tho bank was started.
He had boen looked upon as a modol ot
faithfulness, industry and integrity. He
was always Qrst to arrive at the bank
and last to leavo; ho was the custodian ot
church funds, and widows and timid
women came to his bank because they
had so often seen bis silvered head bowed
in prayer at the altar. He never took a
vacation, and always balanced the books
himself. Such an. attentive officer the
trustees thought could do no wrong.
Tho examiners hinted that perhaps
Dann had reason for working personally
over tho books and wearing the cloak of
sanctity. But the trustees scolf ad at the
idea. However, privato detectives wero
called in and Dann was put under arrest.
He was cool when confronted with accu
sations, and said ho could explain all if
time and access to the books were given
him. The examiners said they could fig
ure the books without him.
Tho news of his arrest caused great ex
citement when it was made known in
June. He was not locked upllko a com
mon oriminal at first, but was allowed to
co to and from his house under survell-
Jnco of detective. Then it was that
Sana made his first and unsuccessful at
tempt to take Ids own life. He swallowed
20 morphine pills. His stomach robelled,
throw off the poison, and ho lived on in
disgrace.
The examiners found in column after
column ot figures abstractions running
back for a long period of years, and con
tluuinc up to tho day he was annrohend-
cd, when he stole a package of $10,000
deposited by exr Justice UliarleslJaulels ot
tue auprcmo i-ouri. ino suortago at
first was stated at $100,000, then at'
$200,000; then, it was said to more than,
reach the bank's assets.
The trial ot Daun, ex-Secretary and.'.
Treasurer of the National Savings Bank,
on 10 indictments for felony, was to have
begun yesterday or to- have bean,
avoided by a plea ot guilty.
At 10:15 District Attorney Qulnby said;
"I desire to move the case of the peopla
against Mr. Dann.
"If tho court please" said Mr. Iloyt, 1
Danu's counsel, "1 shall be obliged to
ask that the case co over for a week. I
have here the certificates of two reputa-
ble physicians to tbe effect that Mr. Dauu
is ill and unable to leave his bed."
Ho then submitted the certificate of
Drs. Harrington and Hopkins to tbe
effect that hU client is in a critical con
dition. No objection was made, by tho District
Attorney and Judge Titus postponed! the
case for ono week. I
Tho cases of Dann's accomplices,. Arm- '
strong and McCredle, were theu called. '
"I next desire to move the cute ot the
People against Armstrong," said Mr. Quln
by. Attorney iusseiourg, lor Armstrong,
objected to this on the ground that th
presence ns a witness of Mr. Danu might
be an Imperative necessity for hbi client's
defense, nud for that reason desired tb
case similarly put over uutil Mr. Dann's
recovery.
The request was granted.
Tho case of MoUrcdib was next moved,
and bis attorney, Tracy C Becker, aUo
made application for adjournment, pre
senting certificates from physicians that
McUreulo is sulterliig from cnrOnlo alco
holism, which has impaired his mental
acuities so as' to prevent his being able to
make defense in a legal proceeding.
Counsel deal red a postponement, tor an
Indefinite period until McOredio could im
prove and asked that the caao bo put over
tue term.
Tho District-Attorney objected and
Judge Titus postpoued tho case for one
week.
