OUR GAIN.
Those who have ridden across the
great Western plains, when the buffalo
nsed to roam by hundreds of thou
sands, but where nothing but their
bleaching boues are now seen, are apt
to Indulge now only in regrets because
of the extermination of these great
herds of bison. We used to feel that way
ourselves; but recently have been led
to take another view of the subject,
and again quote iu confirmation of
our chango of views the old saw, that
there is no such thing as an uutultiga
ted evil. It did seem cruel and wan
ton waste to destroy all the buffaloes,
but a recent writer has put the rait
tor iu such shape that we cannot do
better than give his views on the sub
ject. A sentimentalist writes this of
tbebudalo:
"Of the millions of buflalo which
even in our times ranged the plains In
fmoilnm. none now remain. From
the prairies which they used to darken
the wild herds, down to the last strug'
II. have dissimieared." The
to" e
reply Is; "Well, where is tile loss, ex
cept to the sportsman, who is only
sorry there Is no buflalo left for him to
kill? Where the millions ot hullalo
once roamed there are now millions of
cattle. The grass land that a buflalo
once required for his sustenance now
supports a 8te?r, and a steer Is much
more the nobler and useful animal of
the two. You can't h ive wild animals
and tame ones, too, on the samo terri
tory, and It Is certainly better that the
great, tough, hulking brutes have gone
from our Western plains and the
peaceful cattle
places.

honest praotlce for a long tliu, but
they at length found the length of
their tether, and they are now In p'li

robbing tho UDlted Btatoa mall was

WAsniNOTON, Sep. 80. A. San Fran
cisco dispatch rnys that the Russian scal
er Kotitk has arrived from l'etropaulov
sky with 83,000 aklns for the Russian
American Sealskin Company. Among
the passengers was N. A. Greblnbtzky,
Governor of Copper, Behrlng nud Rebbia
Islands. He Is on his way to St. Peters
burg to report on depredations of British
sealers.
"Sealers have almost ruined the rock
eries on Copper, Behrlng and Robbln Isl
and," said Governor Greblnbtiky. "This
year about 80,000 seals were taken, and
next year, If 20,000 are caught, It will
mean almost death to the industry.
"Six English schooners and one
American ibehooner were seized, and ot
the skins on board 08 per cent, were fe
males. The chances are that all the seals
were heavy with young, so you can easily
see how tho islands are being ruined as
sealing stations.
"When we were at Petropaulovsky the
following schooners were therp, having
been seized iu the vicinity of Copper Isl
ands: Willie JIcGowun, Rose Olneu, Van
couver. Belle Ariel. Maria and C. II.
White. Nearly all the poaching this
year was done by British sealers. I think 1
that not less than 60 British poachers
were around Coppor, Behring and Robbin
Islands."
