It Is quite probable that the cases of the County Commissioners and others connected with the Indictments recently handed down by the Grand Jury will be ready for trial In Novem- " I ber. The cases are exciting much Interest and wo are sorry to see that some people have taken the indict' ments us tho result of a trial and conviction of the accused. People who ( re laboring under this impres sion should rid their minds of it. The proceedings before a grand jury are of an ex parte character. Tho indict ments are not based upon a hearing of both sides of the story, but upon a state of facts as presented by the Commonwealth, hence the County Commissioners should not bo adjudged guilty at the present time. When the caso3 are tried, both tides are heard, nnd all tho lacts are laid before a Jury the Commissioners may succeed in showing the people of the county that they aro not as black as painted. We liono thov will. MessiB. Howes, De- Turk, Reed and Moyer have hereto fore enjoyed reputations which have been, considered above reproach and we havo reason to believe that to-day, notwithstanding the indictments, the people who believe that any missteps they may havo made were preceded by Illegal money transactions are very few. There is a general hope that tho Commissioners, for their own sakeand for tho preservation of Schuylkill's honored name, will be able to show that they were not guilty of any crime or misdemeanor. At all event, wait ' until the trials of the accused are ended before passing judgment. COLORED HELP. THE CELESTIALS OBJECT Cliculur to llin Publla Denouncing tho ' fifury Law. New YoriK, Sen. 20. The Cliiueso Civil Nights League, which has oflices in tlie Bible House in this city, has issued nn mldress to the American public in regard to the Geary registration law, which is declared cruel nnd degrading to the Chinese in America. The address states that thero aro more than 100,000 Chiuamen now living in this country, having come hero precisely as other foreigners havo come, in accordance with the laws of the United States. They Itiilimmil iinm m Innil if fiuulrtTi1 Mini uciicy r'i litis n ifc 101114 jl iicuiiuiii twi caino here and were admitted. They have made their homes here nnd most of thera desire to live here, and the majority aro sober, industrious, law-abiding peaceful men. The circular says: "America says that no mnro Chlnesa laborers shall come hero. We do not quarrel with that. You have the right to hay who shall come. Hut we liavo lived with you for years md have obeyed your laws. Now you af c us to obey a new ono which applies to none of the hundreds of thousands, of other aliens here. We do not think this Is right." Support is asked in tho effort of tho League to have the Geary law repealed. It is stated that the Chinese do not wish to defy It, neither do they wish to Bubmit to a law that every American would call dogiading if applied to him. Growing More Liberal That's' what the human race is doing -r particularly the American part of it. There are a few left who are satisfied with ancient his tory. But most people arc ready to apply modern pro gress and common-sense to the treatment of the human stom ach an organ that demands its rights whether or no; that resents the insults of worn out methods. All this is to emphasize the facts about There was once a prejudice against Cottonseed oil. But people who arc alive, who investigate, who have no bigotry in their composition, have found that pure, refined cottonseed oil combined with selected beef suet is a better article in every conceivable way than hog's lard. And so they wisely use it for cook, ing and are correspondingly healthy and happy. The sales of Cottolene are enormous and constantly increasing; a proof that it is appreciated by appreciative persons. Ask your grocer for it. N. K. FAIRBANKS CO., CHICAGO, and 138 N.
