KERSHNER. 4TH LEGISLATIVE DISTRICT. GEORGE W. KENNEDY SAMUEL A. LOSCH. SAMUEL S. COOPER. Homicide himimicn. The census bureau has issued a verj rolimiluous and important bulletin on homicides. It appears that on Juno 1, 1890, there were in prison in the United States 7,851 persons detained on charges iK homicide. Of these 6,958 were men isnd 808 women. Of the wholo number were whites and 8,030 were negroes. Now, when we consider that of the entire population of the United States 54,983,890 are whites and 7,500,- 000 are negroes, the proportion of "blood-shedding negroes to whites makes a poor showing for tho peace able disposition of tho colored people. For, while tho whites are seven times ns numerous as tho negroes, white fcornicides aro less than twico as numer ous as the negro shoddors of blood. Uy the samo rule, if tho whites were as bloodthirsty as the negroes there would ,bo nearly 20,000 whito homicidos in stead of 4,425. This tho New Orleans Picayune re igards as a very remarkable fact, but it jshows that tho negroos havo not yet learned tho self-control that should characterize a civilized people. People who undertake to right their wrongs ;by violent means either have little con fidence in tho reliability of legal methods, or, in obedience to barbarian Instincts, thoy Ignore them altogether. Tho fact remains that while tho .negroes in population aro to the whites in tho proportion of 7 to 54, negro man slayers aro to tho whites in tho pro portion of 27 to 44. This astonishing fact appears to bo unassailable, and it should silenco tho foolish sentimental' Ism that seeks to place tho American .negroes on a kighcr plane of moral ex cellence than Is held by tho whites. Ono of Mulhattan's. Tho crop of snake stories for 1893 has "been good and full and has furnished some striking examples of Ingenuity in 'the line of fabrication, but tho after- .rnath bids fair to outweigh tho first f rults of the season. Here is one which iwould seem to contradict the report that Mulhattan has retired from bus! moss: According to an exchange there lives, or did quite recently, near Colum bia, S. C, a woman afflicted In a man ner that makes one's flesh creep to think of It For inore than a third of a cen tury she has carried a live snako under the skin of one of her arms. How tho reptile first found lodgment In Its queer situation is as much of a puzzle to the old lady as it is to the hundreds who have visited her for tho purpose of viewing tho long welt whore tho un welcomo creature lies encysted. 'When tho lady first noticed tho bow-shaped ridge on her arm It was of about the diameter of a pin and less than two inches in length. During tho many years that it lias safely nestled In her flesh it has grown from a tnero thread to a snako a foot long and as largo as a lead penclL The eyes of the crcaturo aro plainly vlslblo through tho skin and tho scales can be felt by rubbing tho finger along tho welt formed by Its .body. Physicians pro'nounco it a most -remarkable freak, and have endeavored, without success, to prevail upon tha old lady to havo it removed. Fob tho first time in political history electricity will play quite a prominent part in tho presidential campaign this fall. Orders aggregating several thou stand dollars have already been given tfn alocfe-tce) torches, lanterns and hel mets, ntid electrical supply houses throughout tho country aro receiving' inquiries as to tho cost of these now aids to dazzling display and parades every day. The old foul-smelling and decidedly dangerous torch will ho lri a great mcasuro supplanted by an electri cal torch which will givo out ten-fold as much light without a particlo of cither danger or smell, and enthusiasts will parado In largo numbers with hel mets brilliantly illuminated by aid of storago batteries and concealed wires. In this ono respect at least the cam paign will bo an improvement on Its predecessors. Chicago Is dissatisfied with tho de sign for tho souvenir half dollar and charges that tho features of Columbus do not resemble the discoverer, but sug gest a composite picturo of, Georgo Washington, Thomas Jefferson, IJen jamin Franklin, Ellas Howo and John Wesley. Tho hair is long, brushed straight back from a high and broad forehead and reaching to the shoulders. roSTMASTKns havo a great deal to contend with in the lino of quoerly directed letters. Tho Hoston post master was called on tho other day to deal with a letter addressed Charles Smith, K. Pan. IIo sent it at once to Cape Ann. 1st a recent issue of tho Churchman Micro appears an advertisement from "A Wostcrn Priest" setting forth that ho was out of employment and wanted a job. IIo undertook to "keep a congre gation awako on tho hottest day." Maine orchardists, whoso crops will bo fairly largo, expect to reap a golden harvest this year on account of tho practical failure of tho apple crop In hew York and Michigan, tho two-great applo producing states. A new species of trout has been re cently discovered in tho Columbia river. They aro said t havo large red spots on thorn, which has led to their being named "Dolly Varden" trout. Accobdino to tho United States sta tistics the farm land in Now Jersey Is ratod at an averngo of slxty-fivo dollars per acre, tho highest o4 any state in tho union. That Itnlnlxm- Cliasln rfiuiff. The present campaign ig. developing morn and more Democratic eccentricities as it creeps on apace.
