GRAVER TROUBLES FEARED-
"War Department oruclnU Orently Excited
Over Strlk Hi, port .
Wasiiinoton, Aug. 20. There U much
excitement at tho War Department over
the strikes growing up all over tho coun
try, nnd it is the opinion of the military
Authorities that serious trouble will yet
result as tho strike contagion spreads.
While Assistant Secretary of War Grant
anil the other officers of tho department
are disposed to give out soothing news, it
Is known that they are greatly excited
and believe the labor troubles already on
aro but a mild precursor of what is to
follow.
Oen. L. A. Grant. Assistant Secretary
nf War. eommunicntod to a ronorter just
'what tho mysterious telegrams received
at the department contained, mey were
requisitions for the entire supply oi
arms, ammunitions and accoutrements
to tho credit of the State of Tennessee in
the War Department. These, embracing
600 stand of nrms and 80,000 rounds of
ammunition, were sent in the morning to
Gov. Buchanan.
Gen. Grant explained that the arms
and ammunition form only part of Ten
nessee s quota, under its aiiouneni. ui
$10,000 of the appropriation for -the sup
port of the National Guard of the States,
and that the Governor's requisition would
have been honored at any time, regardless
of the condition of affairs In the Stato. It
so happened that the Governor had not
previously availed himself of his legal
privileges so far as the National Guard
allotment was concerned.
Gen. Grant said that the department
had refused an application to allow volun
teers to use the Government arms at the
Univorsltv of Tennessee, for the reason
that they were intended solely for the use
of tho cadets and could not be loaned to
outside parties, no matter how commend
able their purpose.
Assistant Socretary urnnt saia inai,
while he was not in a position to state
positively, he hardly thought tho United
States troops would be called out to quell
the rioting miners, lie said ne tnougut
the State troops of Tennessee would be
sufficient.
Gen. Granthas telegraphed Instructions
to the commandant of the arsenal at In
dianapolis to forward at once to the Gov
ernor of Tennessee at Knoxville, 600
stands of arms and 89,000 rounds of am
munition, for uso by State authorities in
suppressing miners' riots. Tills aotion
was based on the formal requisition from
Governor Uuchanan.
WOULDN'T GO TO HOMESTEAD.
Idle Non-Union Men Refute to Work for
the Carnegie Company.
Bellkfontk. Pa.. Aug. 20. The effort
mado here to hire men to go to Homo
stead failed. J. T. Munson, late superin
tendent of Gen. Beaver's nail works called
a meeting of the idle iron workers of the
nail works and Bellcfonte furnace com
pany, and about 100 men assembled to
learn where they were wanted, as the call
did not state.
When informed that they were wanted
to go to Homestead the men voted unani
mously to stay at home, although big
inducements were offered. The decision
was somewhat of a surprise to Munson,
as well as everybody in Bellefonte, as few,
If any, of the men bolong to any union.
Munson, however, is still confident of
securing at least 60 men to go to Home
stead before the end of another week.

Indianapolis, Aug. 20. F. D. Somer
by. Supreme Justice of the Iron Hnll,
while on the stantl In the receivership
litigation, acknowledged that tho Su

that it wns Imperative to save the hnlt

GLADSTONE'S CABINET.
Hoped In Home Tliut It Wilt l'ollow In the

Rome, Aug. 20. The return of Mr.
Gladstone to power is much commented
upon by the papers Inspired by the Radt
cals, as the Cabinet presided over by
Lord Salisbury was a favorite in that
quarter.
The reason for this is that tho Conserv
atives always showed marked considera
tion for the Holy See nnd several impor
nnt diplomatic questions were) settled dur
lnc tho last Tory term of office.
The hone Is expressed in many quarters
that tho now Cabinet will continue in and
follow the traditions fet by that which
