Little Mary Ilnyev Assailant.
Camden, N. J., Aug. 8. George Enles,
the negro arrested on suspicion of having
assaulted Mary Hayes, twoivo years old,
iu a swamp near this city Friday, has
been identified by Mary Mafcsaur, com
panion of tho victim. Tho Hayes girl
was too frjfhtened to recognize tho nogro
when he wan taken before her. There
was considerable oxcitemont over tho
arrest and identification of Enles, and
many threat were made to lynch him.
He was safely landed in jail.

are: Senator William B. Allison, of Iowa;
Senator John P. Jones, of Nevada; Con
gressman James B. McCreary, of Ken
tucky; Ex-Comptroller Henry W. Can
non of New York, and Gen. Frauds A
Walker, of Massachusetts.
With tho oxception of Mr. McCreary
these names have all been among those
discussed for tho appointment.
Senator Allison, of Iowa, has seen
nearly !i0 years' servico in the United
States Senate anil was eight years a mem
ber of the Houio before his election to the
Senate. He is chairman of tho Commit
tee on Appropriations, a leading member
of the Committee on Finance, and a
recognlzod loader in linaucial matters.
He voted against the Stewart Free Coin
ago bill when it passed tho Senate In July
lust.
Senator Jones, of Nevada, has beou nn
ardent udvocato of free silver. Ho has
not spoken often in the Senate, but when
ever he lias spokon on fiuanco iu thnt
body his remarks havo always com

also is a member of the Senate Commit
tee on Finance.
Mr. McCreary of Kentucky succeeded
Mr. Perry Belmont ns Chairman on the
Committee of foreign Affairs iu thcHouso
of Representatives, and has devoted con
siderable attention to international ques
tions. Ho introduced the bill which called
out the l'nn-Ainerican Conference in
Washington and also tho House bill pro
viding for the present monetary confer
ence. He voted in favor of free coinngo
of silver.
Mr. Cannon succeeded Mr. John Jay
Knox as United State Comptroller ot the
Currency, and resigned to accept tho
presidency of the Chuso National Bank of
New York. He is clasied as being opposed
to free coinage of silver under existing
conditions.

well-known writer on economic questions.

Department hns begun the preparations
for coining tho five million "Columbian
half dollars" authorized by tho World's
Fair bill.
Tho designs of tho coin havo already
been selected, The reverse will show the
main building of the exposition nnd the
obverse the head of Columbus.
Tho plaster cast of Columbus was made
by A. S. J. Dunbar, sculptor of Washing
ton, from a portrait which is recognized
by experts as being ns nearly authentic ns
any that exists and Is believed to have
been painted for Domenico Mnlipiero, a
Venetian Senntor and historian, In 1501.
Tho work of coining the souvenir
"Columbian half dollars" will occupy n
month or six weeks.
The bill also provides for tho striking of
50.000 bronze medals with appropriate
devices nnd emblems nt n cost of $00,000
and 60,000 vellum and impressions for
diplomas at a cost of $43,000. Ihose
will bo entered upon later.

St. Paul, Minn., Aug. 8. Archbishop
Ireland has mude a brief statment touch
ing the report thnt President Harrison
had urged tho Popo to bestow tho Bed
Hat upon him. Tho statement is as fol
lows; "I am much pained by these con
stant recurring rumors about me.
Whether they origiuato with well mean
ing but imprudent friends or with sinis
ter minded enemies thoy result in giving
deep displeasure and harming tho cause
ot religion. I repeat what I have said
that for all these rumors thoso who spoak
them have no foundation for their words.
Matters grow worse when it is sought to
implicate persons of prominence. These
reports are so evidently false on their face
that no serious minded persons will heed
them."

London,. Aug. 8. Mr. Leslie Stephen
writes to the "Times" that the suborip

Lowell memorial. He says that tho com
