DANNEMonA, N. Y., Aug. 8. The first uso of the electric chair in Dannomora prison yesterday, by which Joseph, bettor known as "Cal" Wood, paid the penalty of his crime, wasln nil respects a success. The current was applied at 11:58. When Wood reached the chair, the keepers stepped to one side, and without hesitation the prisoner saldi "1 want to thank Warden Thayer tor his great kindness to me. Also my keep ers. My time on earth is not lone enough to return my thanks to Judge Whitman for his noble efforts. He has been nearer than a brother to mo, and I hope he will live n long life and died happy In the Lord." As he sat down In tho chair Wood said in a strange voice: "God remember me." He repeated this three times while the straps woro being adjusted. His last words were: "God bless me," repeated twice. Tho fatal signal was givon by Keeper Welts of Auburn prison. As tho contact came Wood's body Btraightened out rigidly nnd the hands turned upward on tho arms of tho chair. Twelve seconds was tho duration of tho first contact. The second contact was two seconds shorter, nnd, as it reached full power, a curl of blue smoke arose from tho murderer's forehead and an odor of burned rubber filled the room. This was repeated in tho third and fourth contact, each of which lasted six seconds. The condemned man's death was pro nouncod by the physicians instant and painless. Jos. Wood, was convicted Sept.17, 1891, of murdering his father-in-law, Leander Pasco, a fnrmor of Warren County, on May 10, 1800. The prisoner ploaded not guilty, alleg ing temporary insanity. Tho successive courts adjudged him guilty, and Gov. Flower refused to inter- iere. On March 2, previous to tho crjme, Wood had secretly married Pasco's daughter. Immediately after tho mar riage they separated, each going home. Pasco, who was very severe with his thlldren, was displeased with the marriage and refused to recognize Wood. About a month later Wood told a neigh bor that Pasco, who was then living with his housekeeper, "ought to bo put out of the way, so tho children could have his property." After Wood and his wife wont to live together they wore subjected to somo petty annoyance, which they charged to Wood soucht to get a warrant for his arrest, but, being denied, uttered s threats. About threo weeks later Pasco was murdered by two gun-shot wounds, was satisfactorily proven that lain In ambush for him. WANTS, teo. tit ANTED. Girl for trcncral VY No children.
