THE CASE OF IAMS.
Itli the Or at Topic of DlteuMlan 1
Ine in the National Guard.
Homestead. Pa., July 20. An Indirect
result of the shooting of Mr. Frick gives
Homestead its ono existing topic of dis
cussion. It Is the case of W. L. lams, the
private of Co. K, Tenth Regiment, who
snouted "Hurrah for tho man who did
Jt,1' when told of tho act of Bcrkman, and
as a punishment was strung up by his
thumbs, had ono side of his head and half
his moustache shaved and was drummed
out of camp. In addition to this disgrace
the sentence carries with it dishonorable
discharge from the National Guard and
denial of the right to enlist in the Federal
army and the rights of citizenship.
The lams case threatens to become
national. Homestead poople talk of
nothing else. Even tho return of Hugh
O'Donncll after his release from prison
was ! subordinated by it. Letters and
telegrams denouncing the treatment of
the young man hnve been received in
Homestead, In Pittsburg, and by the Gov
ernor of Pennsylvania. One of the pro
tests to Gov. Pattison was from the
Washington correspondents of Pennsyl
vania asking for tho removal of Lieut.
Col. Streator, who ordered the punish
ment to lams.
When Col, Streator was told of this last
night, he said if thoso correspondents
came over to his camp and made miy such
treasonable remarks as thoso made by
lams, he would treat them in the same
way ho had treated lams.
Young lams threatens to bring suit
against Col, Streator and Major-Gen.
Snowden, but thiB is by no means the
most serious aspect of tho cose If reports
bo true, It has caused much feeling in
the Nntionnl Guard, particularly among
the rank nnd file, and members of the
Tenth Regiment are authority for the
statement that Co. K, to which Inms be
longed, will have to bo disbanded, because
its men do not intend to re-enlist after
their present terms of enlistment havo
expired.
Several Tenth Regiment men made this
statement. They say that lams was not
popular, but they wish to show their dis
approval of his punishment by leaving
the militia.
Officers of tho troops almost generally
approve Col. Strcator's action. Col. Case,
of the Fourth Regiment, told his men that
if any of them indulged In any jubilation
over Berkman's crime he would treat
them tho bnmo way. But if Col. Cose
had heard the expressions of some of his
soldiers to a reporter ho would have dis
covered that they do not share his views in
approving the humiliating punishment ac
corded to Private lams.
Thoy condemned lams' remark, but
thought his punishment brutal and out
rageous. Officers of lams' regiment, the
Tenth, were seemingly a unjt in uphold
ing Col. Streator. They grew heated In
thoir condemnation of the disgraced pri
vate and lauded their commander for his
action. If many of tho officers think lams
was treated harshly, they failed to say so.
A few of them, however, made comments
not flattering to Streator's action.
lams, tho disgraced man, camo to Home
stead yesterday from Pittsburg, where he
spent the night. He was looking for Col.
Streator. Ho crossed the river.to the
camp of the Tenth and was told that Col.
streator had crossed to the other slue,
lams came back, but did not And the
colonel. Ho then went bock to Pitts
burg.
Planning a Tile Strike.
St. Louis, July 20. Last night at a
meeting of carpenters a number of ad
dresses were made advocating a strike in
the near future, if every demand of organ
ized labor in this city is not acceded to.
A committee was appointed to order a
strike if tho boss-builders do not oeaso
using non-union mado doors, frames, etc
The situation in the building trade looks
serious, as It is not improbable that dur
ing the coming week there will be a cen
tral strike of carpenters in Bupport of the
planing mill employes. With the carpen
ters and the planing mill employes on a
strike the other trades would be obliged
to quit work.
Funds to limploy Striker' Counsel.
St. Paul, July 26. A meeting has
been called here for the purpose of form
ing an organization to raise funds to sup
ply the arrested Homestead workmen
with counsel when they are put on trial
on the charge of murder. Two promi
nent lawyers, W. H. Erwln, of St. Paul,
and George W. Arno, of Sioux City, have
declared that they will appear for the de
fense of the Homestead men if- their ex
nensea are naid. It is thoucrht a larore
fund will bo obtained, and that other
prominent lawyers will be secured.
