CLEVELAND KNOWS IT.
The New York Herald's (Dera).
Albany special warns the Democracy
of New York that "the chances at the
heKlnulns of the fight slightly favor
the Republicans and that the Demo
crats will have to institute a vigorous
campaign at once to overcome the
slight lead of their opponents."
Make no mistake about it, Cleveland
Mtinni carrv New York. That is the
testimony of the most eminent Demo.
crate in the state, and according to
Senator Carlisle, that la the testimony
of Grover Cleveland himself. In an
interview printed in the Democratic
Clncinattl Enquirer, June 19, Senator
Carlisle was asked :
"Is It true, Senator, that you have
said that Cleveland cannot carry New
York?"
"Yes;" and then he added slgnlfl
r-nnt.lv. "I never said so until Mr,
Cleveland said it to me."
Grover Cleveland cauuot carry New
York.
CHAIRMAN HARRITY.
From N. Y. Sun, (Dem.)
We liave already utated Borne of the
objectioua to Mr. Harrity's appoint
merit. Iu the first place, he has inude
himself exceedingly unpopular with
the Democracy of New York. There
is probably no man in the country
who is so objectionable to them.
Governor Hill especially has a right
to regard this promotion as an insult
to himself; and we may be sure that
iu the vast array of Governor Hill's
devoted friends, who aro to be lound
in everv nart of this state, some will
feel disposed to resent It.
Moreover, Mr. Harrily has had no
experience that can qualify him for
the task he has now assumed. All
that he knows of politics he has
learned In Pennsylvania, and
there he has uover conducted a state
campaign. He has had control In
Philadelphia, and he has distracted
and divided the party, and brought
the Democracy of the state into such
a condltlou that the Republicans now
oount on electing two-thirds of both
branches of the Legislature, and on
gaining five members of Congress and
giving Harrison a larger ma)ority than
Blaine had In 1854.
When theMoKlnley act was passed
there were reduqtlons of wages in the
woollen and cotton trades in Lan
cashire in order that there might he
some chance of forcing the goods into
the American market. That reduc
tion has not eufucod, Tho manufac
turers are now compelled to order a
second reduction of 10 per cent, In I
operatives' wages. This action will
be resisted, and a strike and look-out
will follow. That la the English ex-
periance under a revenue Uxifl. What!
has happened simultaneously in New
EiiRlaud? There has been no decrease
of wages in the cotton factories since
the passago of the McKiuley act.
Wages have been steady for two years
in the face of reductions abroad; and
now the time has come when an in
crease can bo ordered. Fall River la
one of the chiel centres of this Indus
try. The manufacturers have vol
untarily put up the price of piece
work and the weavers' wages, and
have voted to pay as much for fifty
eight hours', work as for sixty hours'
work. This increase has followed the
McKinley net, under which addi
tional protection was oflored for the
higher grades of cotton manufacturers;
yet Mr. Cleveland asserts that it Is a
"demonstrated falsity" that anything
of the kind can happen.

There was once a prejudice
against Cottonseed oil. But
people who are alive, who
investigate, who have no
bigotry in their composition,
have found that pure, refined
cottonseed oil combined with
selected beef suet is a better

SINKING OF THE ALVA
N:
irrow Escape of W. K. Van
derbilt and His Party.
RUN DOWN BY A BIG STEAMSHIP
The Yacht Wan at Anchor on Tfnntnckot
Shoals During a Fir--All on Hoard
Saved The Alvn Wu tho Finest Pleas
ure Hoat In Existence.
Htanms, Mass., July 23. Whllo at an
chor, in tho fog on Nnntucket Shoals yes
terday, W. K. Vanderbilt's yacht, Alva,
was run Into by the steamer II. F. Dlmock
and sunk, All on board tho Alva, in
cluding W. K. Vhnderbllt nnd party, were
unveil nnd tnken on bonrtl tho Ditnock.
They were landed nt Boston.
The fog was tldck over the Nnntucket
Shoals nnd tho look-outs on both vessels
could not linre seen bulla knot ahead to
save their lives.
Shouts of sailors and tbo Vnnderbilt
party and the blowing of the whistles of
both boats miule n pnndemonium within a
few seconds of tho nccident.
The sharp prow of tho iron steamer
Dlmock lmd penetrated about seven feet
into tho yncht's side. Tho big vessel was
nt half speed on account of the fog, and it
was due to this that all ot W. K. Vander
bilt's party were saved.
In tho wild confusion that followed the
contact of the vessels tho crews of both
retained their presence of mind. The fifty
five members of the Alvn crew rushed nft
and swung ropes to the crow of the steamer.
Just as Mr. Vanderbilt appeared from
tho cabin gangway pale, but self-possessed,
nnd with a lady on each arm, the captain
of the Alva raised tho warning cry: "She
is sinking."
Not a moment was lost in hurrying Mr.
Vanderbilt and tho dozen or so of his guests
aboard the Dimock. The crew scrambled
quickly after them, and hardly had the
last man clambered nboard when with a
rush the two hundred foot yacht careened
nnd sank from view. There were so few
minutes elapsing between tho collision nnd
the sinking that it was like a dream to the
millionaire and his friends.
In the scramble for life wearing ap
parel and jewelry had been neglected, nnd
none of the magnificent furnishings of
tho yacht were saved. The possengers and
crew of tbo ill-fnted Alva wero afforded
every help and consideration by the cap
tain of tho Dimock and his officers.
While regretting the loss of his magni
ficent yncht and its sumptuous furniture
nnd equipment, Mr. Vanderbilt was very
thankful that no loss of life had occurred.
On Nantucket Shoals tho skeletons of
hundreds of good vessels lie. Mr. Vnn
derbilt hss not yet determined whether or
not ho will mako an effort to raise tho
Alva. Owing to the amount of plnte iu
her commisarlat an effort will un
doubtedly be made to raise her.

of his brother. Tho statement that they
are now living with their mother nt the

is disproved by the action taken by Mrs,
Deacon for a legal order allowing her
to sco them.
