WILL BE ALL RIGHT. Washington Official. Think Ryder Will be Vindicated. WAsniKOTOH, July 23. Tho State De partment has received no information about tho alleged nrrcst of Consul Ryder nt Copenhagen for fraud, and doesn't know whether there Is any truth In the story or not. It is known, however, that Mr. Ryder has been having Borne trouble over tho settlement of an estate, and it is quite likely that lie may have been prosecuted. The Department officials are certain that there will bo no trouble in establishing an nbsoluto vindication of the Consul. It appears that Consul Ryder was called upon to settle up an estate, Including n small bequest of Kometlilng less than $100 the testator dying in America, In the settlement the relatives claim that they did not recelvo $35, which wns due them. On the other hnnd, Consul Ryder has receipts and papers from them covering the whole transaction. There has been some correspondence on the subject between the State Department and tho Danish Minister, and their investigation effectually cleared the Consul of nny wrongdoing. Tho officials of tho Depart ment also point to lho fact that Mr. Ry der hns given very satisfactory service in tho Consular field for more than 20 years, nnd say that it is not likely now that ho would go astray for a paltry sum of $35. WESTERN RATE WAR. Railroads Centering In St. Louis Flglit Ine Each Oilier. St. Louis, July 23. The opening gun has been fired in what will probably re sult In tho liveliest rate war thnt West ern railroads have engaged in for some years. Thu announcement that the Santa Fe and San Francisco lines had mndo n. rato of $12 from Chicago nnd St. Louis to Denvtr and return was quickly fol lowed by similar action on the part of the Missouri Pacific, Chicago & Alton, nnd Wabash railroads. Each of these roads has posted the $12 rato nnd It Is 'Intimated thnt tho war may be "carried into Africa." Tho action of the Santa Fo lino is regarded as uncalled for and is In violation of the Western Traffic Association ngreemcnt... This vio lation nullifies all contracts , and it will not bo surprising it cdrnp'eting' lines will inaugurate a rato war to the west, south and southwest thnt will exceed tho rate war of former years.
