supposed murders In the Fourth of July
Canyon, bus returned and reports that he
found a large area that had been burned
over. The ashes resembled bono ashes,
and some which wero in the form ot bones
crumbled upon being touched. The ashes
were brought hero for examination by an
expert.

this city. He arrived nt tho Windsor Ho
tel yesterday with his wife, and made
himself about as much detested as a man
can in ono day.
One of his mnny orders was that he
should not he disturbed by anyono under
any circumstances, and tho many persons
who called when they heard of his arrival
were bo told. One prominent merchant
here, a great ndmlrer of his, who ulso
ocosted him, was informed by Kipling
that he did not wish for any now ac
quaintances. The worst treatment was recolved by
the Pen nnd Pencil Club, to which
the principal artists and literary
folks of the Dominion belong. They ten
dered a reception in their beautiful club
rooms; but without even going to the
trouble to Inform them to that effect, ho
failed to appear and Blighted them in a
manner which will never bo forgotten.

$2,000 were realized al a fair given yester
day by Mrs. J. N. Rutter, a New York
cottager hero, for tho benefit of the Chil
dren's Fold of New York. The money
will be used to purchase a summer homo
for children somewhere nlong the Hudson.
The goods sold nt the fair wero donated
by Mrs. Rutter. The gathering at the cot
tage was a most brilliant one, the elite of
the sensido being present and fnbuloui
prices being obtained for the goods.
Work on the Ruins of St. .John's,
Halifax, July 22 Gen. Sir John Itoss
received a cable dispatch from the Im
; pedal authorities yesterday, ordering him
to send a company of Eoyal Engineers to
St. John's, N. P. They nro required there
to blow down walls which nro either dan
gerous or difficult to remove by ordinary
means. The nuinbor of families burned
out is 1,874, making 0,000 people rendered
homeless by the great lire.
