"Work was begun on tho Mahanoy City
end ol the electrio railway Monday.
Ground was broken this side of the Head
ing crossing, where tho Reilly-Kaiei
accident accurred. Invoices for tho raih
have beon received and their arrivt l is
oxpected daily. Tboy will be laid as soon
as thoy arrive.
Tho road has been graded and tho rails
have beon laid from Mahanoy l'lano to
Uilberton.
The work towards St. Nicholas, from
Oilberton and Mahanoy City, will bt
pushed us fast as the company's forco can

A large shipment of rails for the St
Nicholas section arrived Monday.
It will not bo long before the electric
railway ttock will run up to a fancj
figure. The branch from town to Gitard
ville is paying well and whon tho other

panied by bis attorney, S. G. M. Hollo-
peter, Esq., appeared beforo the School
Board last night and stated that tho prop
erty at the corner ot Cherry and Jardln
ttreets, owned by him and claimed by the
buard us a site for u new school building,
was not for tale, but that if tho board
should Insist "upon having it tho price
would be $5,000. Mr. Lingfelt said he
wm receiving $23 a u.onlh in rents from
the place. The board promptly stamped
thn figure too high and a discussion ended
without any definito result.
DEFEATED IN THE HOUSE.

mont Voted Down-Sunday Closing.
Washikoton, July 20. In anticipation
of tho voto on the World's Fair appropri
ation thero was quite a full attendavco of
members In the House.
On motion of Mr. McMillan (Dem. , Tenn.)
the resolution fixing adjournment on the
25th inst., reported by tho Committee ou
Ways and Means, was laid over for tho
nresent.
The House then went Into Committee of
tho Whole on tho Sundry Civil Appropri
ation bill, Mr. Lester (Dem. Qa.) in the
chair, the pending amendment being tho
appropriation for the World's Fair.
Tho House then proceeded to vote on
the amendments oifered. The Increase
mode by the Senute in tho appropriation
for Government exhibits from $ai(J,0UU to
$000,000 was disacreed to: .also to all In
creases of the Senate relating to the
World's Columbian Exposition.
When tho $5,000,000 souvenir coin
clause was reached, Mr. Atkinson (Rep.,
Pa.) offered nn nmendmont forbidding any
use of tho appropriation until satisfactory
proof is given by the Fair authorities that
no intoxicating liquors sunn bo sold, ex
cept for medicinnl, mechanical or scien-
tilio purposes. Defeated, yeas 41, nays 180.
An amendment was offered by Mr,
Patterson (Dem.. Tenn.) and voted down,
appropriating 550,000 for statistical infor
mation regarding the moral, religious,
and educational development of the
colored race.
Mr. O'Neill (Rep., Pa.) endeavored to
havo the S5.000.00O voted as a loan to bo
paid back, before any other Indebtedness.
and also to divert $1,500,000 of this
amount to be refunded to stockholders of
the Centennial Exhibition at Philadelphia
In 1870. These propositions were voted
down.
The vote now recurred on the Sennte
proposition appropriating $5,000,000. On
a viva voco vote this was defeated yeas,
08: noes. 132. Tellers were then ordered.
The vote by tellers, Messrs. Hooker of
New York and Halman acting as tollers,
was: yeas. Ul: noes. 110.
On a viva voco vote on concurring In
tho Senate amendment to close the Fair
on Sunday was carried, 78 to 74. Tellers
were then ordered.
The vote by tellers on concurring In tho
amendment, was 102 yeas, 72 nnys. An
nouncement received with annlause.
The appropriation of $43,000 for 50,000
bronze medals and diplomas was agreed
to in Committee of the Whole.
ALICE MITCHELL'S TRIAL.
Testimony Miowlnir That Insanity Was
Inherent in tho Family,
Memphis, Tenu., July 20. The second
day's proceedings in the Alice Mitchell
trial were witnessed by a largo crowd.
Tho deposition of Juliet Bishop ot Brook
vllle, Ind., was read. She Is Mrs. Mit
chell's step-daughter, and testified that
Mrs. Mitchell once made an effort to
kill her. So strong was her resentment
that Mrs. Bishop Mas compelled to leave
homo.
