Much work remains for the com
mon schools. The need of more efleo-
tlveand more general schooling Is
shown by the presence in the com
munity of men who declare that Re
publican reciprocity and Democratic
free trade are essentially the same
thing. It will not do to extol the
work of the optional free schools too
much when men who should have
been schooled in those institutions re
main so befogged that they can't see
the difference between taxing foreign
goods that compete against home pro
ducts, and on the other hand, dis
criminating in favor of such imports
as do not enter Into competition with
American Industries. Every instance
oflnablllty to appreciate this differ
ence adds so much to the strength of
the argument in favor of compulsory
education.
Nmtiikk importations, nor Immi
gratlous, nor inaeUlnery, should be
permitted to euter Into so fierce a com
petition with our produelug citizens
as, in any degree, to prevent them
from acquiring an adequate main
tenance In exchange for their labor;
and an opportunity should be oon-
tiiuully accessible to the unfed, the
.
unclad and the homeless, to proouro
an adequate supply of these necessities
to human existence in exohauge for u
reasonable expenditure of human ef
fort. Tho importation of a compel!
tlve nrtlole or the immigration of a
competiug workman dooms an Amer
ican producer to a condition of rela
tive idleness and its consequent
penury. Will the American producer
quietly yiold to this encroachment on
lib rights as a citizen? If not, he
will use his influence In procuring
protective legislation.
The Colored Natioual Convention,
held at Cincinnati, expressed a move
ment which merits the sympathy aud
thoughtful attention of the whole
country. The delegates made through
out a strong plea', in behalf of the
colored race, nor for special laws nor
special fuvor, but merely for Justice,
and for a fair and equal opportunity
with white men In the race of life.
In the light of their treatment In the
South, both at the polls and In courts

especially of late, mob rule has con

Sydney, July 18. Humors linvo reach
ed here from Timor that there has been a
volcanic eruption on the Island of Snngir.
one of tho Philippine group, and that
most of the Inhabitants have been killed.
Several natives who have just returned
from a voyage near Snngir, and who had
Intended to land on the Island, wero pre
vented by tho eight of mountains belching
forth smoke and fire. They report that
the whole island was on fire.
The water along the coast wag full, they
said, of half burned wreckage, pieces of '
houses and charred boulas. The whole
population, estimated at about 12,000,
i seemed to have been swept Into tho sua or
burned, as not a living eoul was to be
aeen. Streams of lav were still flowing
toward the shore, showing that the activ
ity of the volcanoes hafl not abated.

such utensils as the natives of tho Plill-

In the Phillipinos as peculiar to the natives
of Sanglr and the nearby Islands of the
Philllpine groupo. The ship was three

Those reports are partially oredtted hero,

tho conter of tho island are known to have
threatened activity during the last tan
months.
THE INFLUENCE OF MUSIC.
Cleveland writes ns follows;
Gray Gables, July 18.
Will S. Hays.
Dear Sir I received a copy of the song
you have written to be used, as you say,
for an "encourager" during the approach
intr cnmnalirn. I believe wikh vou that
the influence, of songs' and music of tho
right sort ought not to bo overlooked as an
Important-adjunct to the political cam
paign, and so far as I am able to judge,
this latest production of yours will
serve to a good purpose In that direction.
Of one thing I urn certain, the composition
ot this song by you is a sure demonstration
that tho composer Is actuated by tho sort
of spirit and enthusiasm which win eleo-
tlons. very truly yours,
"Grover Cleveland."

New Haven, July 18. From tho reti

Gen. Barton, agent of tho Adams Ex
press Company in this city, absolutely re
fused to talk nbout tho nlleged robbery or
to say whether the sum was more or less
than $00,000.
It is said here that detectives have been
employed by the express company and are
at work, but no complaint ot snob a loss
has been made to the local police?
