SUFFERING AMONG CHILDREN Additional Orders to Brakomen and Conductors Under the Reading System Harry Davenport's Vonturo. IIE Bultry weather is hvo. Reports of TTdpW suffering children are coming in irom an quarters of tho town. There was plenty suf fering yostorday among adults. Even the sturdiest com. plained of the heat and couldn't see that life was very much worth living under such seething weather conditions. Among the older people, however, thero was only one caeo reported in which serious results were feared. Agent T. J, Davies, of tho depot, was overcome by tho heat, but was all right again to-day. Tho discovery has been made that on one side of tho new quarter dollar there are thirteen seperate representations of the number thirteen. An exchange says that a physician discovered the fact, and thai it was probably the intention of tho designer of the new silver piece to have thirteen occur thirteen times, but thero are fow people who have noticed this fact. There are 13 stars, 13 letters in the scroll head in tho eagle's beak, 13 marginal feathers In each wing, 13 tail feathers, 13 parallel lines in the shield, 13 horizontal bars, 13 arrow hoads in one foot, 13 leaves on the branch in the other foot, and 13 letters in the words "quarter dollar." Perhaps that supersti tion is the reason people prefer "halves to quarters." Tho committee having chargo of the arrangements for the 13th annual conven tion of the Firemen's Association of tbo State of Pennsylvania, to be held at Hazloton on September 20, 21, 22 and 23, has issued elegant invitations to the fire companios of tho state. An interesting circular describing the advantages of Eaz leton as' a place for tho convention and forecasting the hotel and other Arrange ments for the occasion has also been sont out. The Hnzleton people evidently Intend to give the, "tiro laddfos" a good time. Tbo Roading system has issued anotbor circular of instructions to its passenger conductors and brakemon. At all stations where a passonger train stops, the name of tho station must bo twico announced loudly, slowly and distinctly, after the train has come to a full stop, Inside of oach car, and if convenient inside each end of each car. Immediately after leaving the station tho following announcement must be made In each car and in each end of each car : "The next station will be " (giving Its name ) If the next station will bo a signal station, announce, "the next station will bo stop on signal." If the train passes (without stopping) any signal station which has been announced, another announcement must then bo made for the next station. At all stations whoro passengers are notified to move from one car to another, and at all stations whore passengers are notified to change cars, and at all terminal stations, these words must be added as a part of tho announcement, "do not overlook your baggage." Henry Davenport, tho proprietor of the notorious variety show known as the May Davenport female combination, is about to float an insuranco scheme in the form of a 1 cent weekly paper, to be published sim ultaneously In Wilkos-Barro and Scranton, Tho holder of a copy ol the curront Issue of the journal will bo entitled to compen sation for injury or a largo amount in cash in case of death, When informed that tbo state authorities recently jumped on tho Philadelphia Inquirer for a similar scheme, Mr. Davenport said that a little thing like tbat wouldn't Interfere with his plans. He had figured out the cost in running tho Wilkes-Barre Press, as he terms his new sheet, and has without doubt ascertained that there are "millions in it." V The trouble at Homestead seems to bo the absorbing topic of conversation, especially among our laboring classes. You will find partisans on each side of tbo controversy, but the most radical advocate of either side is tho man who is a labor advocate for revenuo only, T. V. Powderly. He is at the head of tho Knights of Labor, and is reported as saying tbat the struggle at Homestead "Is but the rumbling of the coming revolution that is to decide whether Wall streot shall or shall not control tho country." This it wild, demsgogical rubbish. Mr, Powderly; does not believo it, and he'ls' only' talking for effect Wall ttrtol swr controlled this country, U not K controlling It now, and never will. The country is controlled by the votes of millions and millions of Intelligent cilizms, and a large proportion of those votes an cast by workingmen. 4 Powderly's uttoranco is un-American. Tho workingmen ol this country want no revolution that is to be wrought out bj dynamite, by the rifle and the torch. They have tho best government over given ti man, and they know it. The organic law in which it rests provides for whatever reform may bo deorued necessary, and it IrownB upon all attempts at violence. The General Mastor Workman who does no; work might find some better way ol earning his salary than by playing tho parrot to Anarchist Host. The worst anarchists tho really danger ous classes in this country are not the Hosts who plot revolution while gulping down beer, but the editors who preach it from luxurious editorial rooms in order to gather in a Niagara of pennies over the counters in the fretcoed nubllcation offices. These men are the real jcemies of society If wo may believe thorn, tho whole Gov ernment is a grand swindle. Every man who has made a fortunols a robber. Every manufacturer is a plunderer. Evory capitalist is an outlaw. This doctrine is preached from one end of tho year to the other, not that the writers believe it, but because jt pays. They are anarchists, but for revonue only. Peter. BEAR THIS IN MIND. The Grant Hand will Open l'astlme Turk To-morrow. Everybody who wishes a day of solid enjoyment will attend the grand opening pienjo to be held at Pastime Park to-morrow under the auspices of the Grant Band of town. A grand concert by the band will signalize the event and the famous Schoppe orchestra of ton pieces will furnish music at the dancing pavilion. There will bo no catch-penny enterprises at tho park, all the contrivances for amusement of the old and young being of a perfectly legit' imate order and calculated to give the most amusement at the lowest price. The ride to the park over the new section of the electric railway will itself more than repay tbo visitors. Tho mammoth carousal will whirl with old-time popularity and when the shades of night fall, instead of finding themselves in a dark or dimly lighted place, will be able to continue enjoying themselves beneath tho rays of electric lights. It is the intention of tho park management to make tho place popular with all. Everything will bo done to make the place a family resort. Such a place has been soroly needed in this valley since the abandonment of Columbia Park and it will be well patronizod. Bear in mind the Grant Band will open Pastimo Park to-morrow by holding a grand musical festival and picnic. IM2KSOJtAX. Miss Laura Butts spent to-day in St, Olair visiting friends. TENANTS COMPLAIN BITTERLY Other Happenings Cleaned by Our Corps of Reporters A Largo Excursion to Lake side To-day. HE residents ol East Centre street, near the Lehigh depot, were startled this morning by a woman's voico shouting a cry of "Fire I" Atthoeamo time clouds of thick, black smoke poured from a window of one! of the rows of frame buildings on tho south sideof Centre street, betwoen Whito street and Plum alley, owned by John Bobbins. Neighbors hastened to tho house and succeeded, with the aid of a few buckets of water, in subduing the cause of trouble. The fire companios wero not callod out. Tbo woman who gavo the alarm was Mrs. It. Shapira. She awoke while ex periencing a suffocating sensation. When she realized her position sho jumped from her bed and alarmed the neighbors. Her room was filled with smoke and her friends say that she barely escaped suffocation. It appears that when Mrs. Shapira's servant started a fir a In the kitchen stove this morning the chimney would not carry off the smoke, which made its way into the rooms. The tenants of the houses in tho vicinity were very indignant this morning. They said that the chimney has been complained of repeatedly, but for some unknown reason it has not roceived the attention of tho landlord. Mrs. Shapira had an exciting exporienco with fire on tho Fourth of July and it took but little smoke to alarm her to-day. The clothing of her young niece was lit on flro and in pulling tho clothing from tho child Mrs. Shapira had her hands burned. MAHANOY SCOOPED. Tho Hustlers of Town Give Them Drubbing. Tbore was a game ot base ball at Maha noy City yestorday between tho club of that placo and The Hustlers of town. All the selections were of a standard character and many musical men who listened to tbo renditions declared that the concort was one oi the finest they had over heard. Tbore is one consolation Prof. Zeitz will have whon be takes his departure. Ho has made tho Grant Band ono of the finest musical organizations In tho state, and of which our townsmen aro proud. The Boston Herald says that a secret organization of workingmen called "Our Own Club" has been formed in that city for tho purpose of giving Union workers military training. The men who took the oath of allegiance' state that the time has come when the' working people of this country must pre pare to overthrow the Pinkertons, or any similar body of what they termed "hired assistants and mercenary dosperadoes." It is tbo opinion of these men that the large capitalists of this country have concluded to destroy all labor organizations, in order that reductions of wages may be enforced without protest from the wage-earners. It is claimed that the New England1 Granite Manufacturers' Association is in sympathy with Carnegie, Frick and Pink erton, and that its members would take similar action to that at Homestead in t'uo granite cutters' striko if they had tho courage. It is asserted by the members of the club that tho legislation enacted against the Pinkortons by this and other states is of no practical value to the Union workers. The Pinkerton army, they maintain, can bo placed in any state by capitalists, re gardless of any laws. Sub-committees were appointed to organize branches of the society in every industrial centre of the Commonwealth and no man will be per mitted te join unless ho is a wage earner and can successfully answer certain per tinent questions.
