SPRING MILLINERY.
flowers That lllooin In tho lfcticlgear oi
l'nlr Wearers.
Spring millinery is a trifle eccentric,
and, therefore, is not quite as attractive
to the majority of persons as when it
showed more conservative styles. Very
few people like marked departures in
milliner', and it is only to the very few
that they are becoming1. Once in a
while there is a radical novelty that
looks well, but for the most part, mil
linery is as cireunibcribed as propriety,
nml when one goes outsido of certain
lines, there is suro to bo trouble.
Small bonnets are admissible for
ladies of all ages. They are snug and
close-fitting, and has less trimming than
usual; but this trimming should bo very
handsome, and must be arranged in a
very artistic fashion. Tho frames oi
some of the new bonnets aro In modified
toque shape, and aro not so stylish or
becoming as many of tho models shown
on former occasions. Tho bonnet of
tho present sits too squarely across tho
top of the head to be pretty. The be
coming bonnet should extend down the
6ldes, or bo finished with an arclt in
front. Tho perfectly flat, round shape
is trying, and while many of these will
be worn, most women will accept them
with a few grains of reluctance.
Some of tho new shapes aro covered
with velvet, others are a mass of gauze
in puffs, folds and plaitingsj others are
lace-covered, and some exceedingly
pretty material in tho way of laco braids
and old-fashioned fancy Neapolitan and
Tuscan aro shown. i
There aro some flat bonnets that are
perched high upon tho head over the
hair. In silhouetto they bear a very
6triking resemblance to an old fashioned
flat saddle. Thoy aro very elaborately
filled in under tho front and back edges
with plaitings, puffs, ruchings and tiny
plumes. There aro velvet strings which
tie under tho chin in a how. Some ol
tho velvet strings havo tho effect of
stirrup straps, and uro not, as rule be
comingly arranged.
It must not, however, be imagined
that ladies aro under obligations to
wear these eccentric bonnets.
There are pretty, close-fitting shapes
which havo scarcely been out of market
for a scoro of years. Ono stylo, es
pecially, has been seen so often that the
remark has frequently ueen made that
it must be old enough to vote, oven if its
wearer could not. It curves down over
the side of the head, is slightly rounded
up in tho back, and has a brim turning
out a very little ut tho top and sides.
Tho trimming is of loops of velvet, small
plums, rolls or bows of ribbon, and
as tho season advances, will bo of flow
ers und foliage.
Thoro are somo very pretty haw with
moderately high crowns, rather narrow
hrims rolled up nt ono sido. A spray of
flowers or plumes is sot under tho up
turned edge of tho brim, and the hat is
trimmed with loops of ribbon, flowers, .
or knots of velvet or lace, and some-!
times all these materials massed to
gether. Round hats will bo popular.
Tho brims may bo bent in, curved over,
and tucked up in all sorts of fanciful
fashions, or they may be left straight
and flapping. Vpung ladies will wear
hats in preference to bonnets for all or
dinary occasions, and in many cases for
drowsy wear. I
Children's hats aro wide-brirametl,
round und very simply trimmed with
flowers und ribbon.
A Mischievous Illrd.
There is a parrot in St. Louis, which
exclaims, whenever a man enters tho
room: "You're drunk, sir, and had. het
ter go away. I don't want to see you
till you're over It." Peoplo wonder how
tho bird catches on, but tho explanation
is simple; it doesn't know how to say
anything ebso, and of courso in making
tho remark to every man it frequently
gets near homo. Ono gentleman who
called thought it was tho lady of tho
house speaking, and rushed out of tho
parlor. Sho out down to write a noto of
explanation to him, when to her amaze
ment a servant brought her a noto from
tho gentleman she was writing to, in
which ho stated that ho acknowledged
with humility that ho had perhaps
taken too much wino -with his dinner,
but had hoped on calling on her that
sho would not havo detected it. As sho
had done bo, however, ho offered his
most abject apologies and a prayer for
forglvenc&s.

VICTORY FOR THE LIBERALS.
Tholr Gnlna Are Sufficient to Wipe Out
the Government's majority.
London, July 13. The results of
tho elections show sufficient Liberal
gains to wipe out tho government's ma- I
jority and assure Mr. Gladstone's return
to power.
Tho net Liberal gain thus far is 87.
This gives a majority of 5 against the
Conservatives on division.
The report of Mr. Gladstone's having
been taken seriously ill nfter his fcpeech at
Pcnlcuck is unfounded. Mr. Gladstone it
in his usual health.
London, July 18. Tho election in Mid
lothian occurred yesterday. For some
reason best known to themselves the Tor
ies nro curiously sanguine of defeating Mr.
Gladstone. The result will not be known
until officially declared, which will be this
afternoon. The vote was heavy. It is es
timated that not less than 85 per cent of
tho voting list was polled, and there is
reason to fear thnt Mr. Gladstone's major
ity is somewhat reduced. Col. Wauchopo
was the Liberal-Unionist candidate
against Gladstone.
