The Now York Sun of Saturday editorially says of Pennsylvania's Governor: "There Is nothing now to provent the strikers at Homestead from open ing the great Carnegie plant ou their own account. They are in full posses sion of tho property ; they hold their title from the Governor of Pennsylva nia ; and it only remains for them to capture Carnegie and his partners and force them to work as slaves in man aging the business. "Law and order are no more ; and the Constitution is spit upon by the Executive of Pennsylvania. And as if it were not enough that this black and bloody record of murder and robbery has been achieved on the banks of the Monongahela, there must arise an inconceivable crank in Washington to bring derision and shame upon the Constitution and history of the United States, on tho very floor of the Senate 1 "It behooves every man to know that these are serious times, and that tho safeguards of our liberties are in peril, when a prolllgate and vicious press is inciting to murder and to riot, and an emasculate and cowardly Executive is false to every idea and principle of duty." STILL ANOTHER VICTIM. The New York Itecorder continues to furnish samples of victims of Re publican oppression. Tho latest one is Carl Schurz: Cail Schurz will take the stump for Mr. Cleveland in the coming cam paign. What a victim of Republican oppression! He came here years and years ago, when the Republican party was in the first flush of its early man hood, and It clasped him to Its bosom. How changed the man but not the party! The party Is still in the old fight for human liberty. It is still In the vanguard of human progress. Hut where Is Mr. Bchurz the man whom it made a great editor, whom It sent to the United States Senate and to the Cabinet, the man to whom It gave the first ofllces in its gift under the Constitution ? He has gone over to its enemy. And why? Nobody can tell except Mr. Schurz, who has always been traveling with tho biggest kind of a poulticed political head. Yesterday it was civil service reform, when, if any kind of civil service reform ob tained, ho should not get anything, Now ho la against the tariff against tho American doctrine of the Ameri can market for American. There is no man in our public life who has boxed the political compass as he has boxed 1L He has been everything and nothing. He has been for the Republican party when it gave him office and against It when It put him out. He 'has 'been with tho Democracy .when It conferred official favors and against it when It held out no prospect of reward. As a victim of Republican oppres sion he Is an interesting study. It made htm Senator, Cabinet officer and great editor. It has nothing moro to give him now, and he turns Mugwump Democrat. It has reduced him to tle ruuks and ho kicks. Carl Schurz as a victim of Repub. llcan oppression Is an interesting study. Take him from the day ho landed here until now and see how he has "panned out," politically and otherwise. WW TO EAT is a difficult problem with many people because but Few articles of food agree with them. The doctor says AVOID GREASE and the result is unpalata ble food. The reason the physician objects to grease is because lard is the article most used, and every phy sician knows that hog lard in any shape is unhealthy and indigestible. Every one interested in pure and healthful food hails with joy the new product GOTTOLENE which is composed of pure cottonseed oil and pure beef suet nothing else not even salt.. It is better than cither lard or butter for all cooking purposes, and one pound of Cottolcne will do as much as two pounds of lard or butter, and it, costs less than either. Every housekeeper that tries Cottolcne will find in it just what she wants. Beware of imitations get the geniune of your grocer. N. K. FAIRBANK & CO., CHICAGO, and 138 N. Dataware Ave., Phils. I St. Johns is built upon a steep hillside; the harbor running cast and west. The heart of the city extends from Beeks Covo to Signal II1U, a distance of about a mila and a half. Along this stretch wore the chief business houses; higher up the hill side, extending probably a mile, wero tho residences and public buildings. A strong southwest wind was raging when, owing to tho careless use of a match, flro broke out in a Btable on Long Hill. Tho first outburst of tho flro swept tho northern part of tho city, nnd finally began to die out for tho luck of fuel. Later a fresh flro broke out and the South side was rapidly burned away. In this portion of tho town wero located tho oil factorios nnd oil tanks, nnd tho re sult in this section is worse than appall ing. Tho cutlro year's oil produot was stored in theso tanks. At night, tho lurid flames leaping up ward toward tho sky, the denso overhang ing smoke nnd tho cries and sobs ot the thousands of homeless presented a heart rending scene. A despatch from Heart's Content said that the railway station at St. Johns, where a temporary telegraph office had been fitted up, had boen destroyed and tha operators driven oil. Later despatches ald that tho flro was raging In tho forest around St. Johns and all telegraph lines had been completely destroyed and rail way communication broken. The last) words transmitted by the operator were that only by wlro could the fa to of the people bo made known, nnd desporato ef forts would bo muilo to establish a connec tion, a feat, ho feared, that would requlra several days. It Is reported that ths British govern ment will give 25,000 pounds and the city of London 0,000 pounds to the sufferers. The Queen Insurance company, it Is said, will lose $800,000 and the Phcenlx $200,000. The total insurance losses will be fully $2,600,000. All the government records have been burned and many lives have doubtlessly been lost, as members of many families are missing. All the fctoreu and provisions ore destroyed. Unless succor comes In plenty nnd at once many must die of starvation. No conception of the disaster that has over whelmed the colony can bo conveyed by message reports. A message from Cat's Cove, seven miles from Brigus, says that the village, con sisting of twenty-six houses, has been en- , 'tirely wiped out of existence. The flro there caught from the woods, wnicn wers set on fhe by ashes on railway track. Fires are raging all around St, Johns, and people ore so completely terror-stricken and demoralized that no fight Is being mado against the flames. Towns fully twenty-two miles distant wero burned nnd the smoke from the fires enveloped the Island for miles. Another message from St. Johns city to Halifax city says that St. Johns is com pletely crushed and wrecked and only generous aid can save the people from an nihilation by starvation. W. TV.
