THE LABOR TROUBLE.
The attempt of the Democrats to
make capital out of the strike at
Homestead has led the New York
Sun, the leading Democratic news
paper of this country, to say: Mr.
Andrew Carnegie's Ideas on the sub
ject of dealing with strikers are
original and in some degree scientific.
We read In an editorial essay In the
World that "there Is war at the
Homestead works, and the employers
have enlisted Pinkerton Hessians and
fortified their property lu order that
they may pour scalding water on their
-discharged workmen If an attack Is
made upon them." "Carnegie," the
World adds, "lives In a baronial castle
In Scotland, his native land."
This subtle vituperation Is directed
against a man who, according to the
World, should unresistingly permit
dissatisfied laborers to destroy his
mills and smash his machinery.
This high-toned and public-spirited
journal holds that Mr. Carnegie has
committed n gross outrage in taking
measures to prevent his discharged
workmen from burning down the
structures at Homestead, and wreck
ing their Bonteuts, by way of protest
against being denied a higher rate of
wages than that which other laborers
are ready aud anxious to accept.
We think that Mr. Carnegie has
adopted none but humane and en
lightened methods for protecting his
property, and for protecting such
workmen as are anxious to exchange
their present condition of Idleness for
one of such occupation as the condi
tions of trade admit of. Instead of
providing muskets and bayonets or
shell and shrapnel for defence, Mr.
Carnegie has set up a vigorous pump
and plenty of hose and water. He
has a search light on a tower, so that
no firebug can apply the torch to his
buildings In the night time; and all
around about the high fence that en
closes his property he has strung
barbed wire, charging the same from
a dynamo with Just a sufficient num
ber of volts to make It exceedingly re
pulsive to the touch.
For this the World holds him up to
public execration as a scoundrelly for
eigner who has placed his heel on the
throat of American labor. No one
will dispute the right of laborers to
organize and protect themselves as In
telligently as they may; but tlio law
of Bupply and demand cannot be
transmuted by artificial obstruction?;
and so far as American labor is con
cerned, we have yet to see that Amer
ican laborers ever burned or destroyed
the property or an employer, ever
wrecked the trains of a railroad out of
eamlty or revenge, or ever committed
ajo those grot biS hriaoua out-
ragea which hove marked the con
stantly recurring struggle between the
employer and the employed. Invari
ably, within our observation, the riot
ing and destruction have been done by
the alien and the lawlees.whlle Amer
ican labor was staying at home and
attending to Its own business. And If
Mr. Carnegie doubles up any Intruders
with his electricity, or douses them
with his hose, no sensible man will
condemn him for his act, or vllllfy
the Independence and resolution that
enables him to protect his property
and ills rights.
OUR FLAG INSULTED.
British hatred of American liberty
and American Institutions has again
been shown In Canada. It was in the
village of Wlartown, Ont., on Domin
ion Day, that the American Hag,
placed above' the Union Jack on the
premises of the Itev. G. A. Yoemnus,
a Presbyterian mluieter, was pulled
down by a mob, and torn to pieces.
And then the crowd depiirted, to the
music of a baud .playing British
authemB, while the loudest throats
gave "three cheers for the Queen."
Slight as this act appears, It indicated
u bitter sentiment, an auti-Amerlcuu
feeling always quick to express Itself
in Great Britain, or in Great Britain's
dependencies. While our government
is not likely to move In this matter, it
cannot help taking cognizance of the
fact, for the Insult was to the country's
emblem, in broad daylight, In the
eyes of a whole community in Canada.
All honor to that minister of the
gospel, who struggled against that
mob, to save the Htars and Stripes
from degredatlou.
The declination of Hon. W. J
Campbell, of Illinois, to serve as chair
man of the Republican National
Committee, Is to be deplored. It was
a mistake, In the first place, to "swap
horses while crossing a stream," as the
lamented Lincoln put it. General
Clarkson should have been made the
chairman, and all would have been
well. It is not too late yet.
The old soldiers, whose pensions
Mr. Cleveland vetoed, are spitting
upon their nanus preparatory to
grasping clubs to "whack the political
life" out of the eluded prophet.
