I'owlck Tells Ills Congregation at "Our National Ilolldny." Tho sermon on Sunday ovonlng In tho MothodiBt Episcopal church was on "Our National Holiday." Tho toxt was from Matt. 22-2li "Bender unto Cmsar tho things that aro Crcsar's and unto God tho things that aro God's." After roforring to tho circumstances which called forth theso words and to their suitableness to tho Dresont occasion tho congregation was aekod to nolo that these words of Christ sanctioned tho idea that thoro aro some tilings that bolong to Cioear as well as somo others that belong to God. Thoy aro a sentenco of perpetual divorco of tho civil and ecclesiastical authorities. Tho thought was indulged by tho Jews that as they woro tho peculiar people of God it was a spooios of idolatry to acknowledge alle gianco to a heather, stato by tho paymont of tax. Honco thoy ask "is it lawful" not is it obligatory but is it right "to pay tributo unto Cesar?" But although tho imperious tyrant at Bomo was utterly an tagonistic to every rollgious principle thny venerated, Christ, refused to absolvo them from thoir allegiance or to ir.terfero in any way between thoir duty as cit zens and their duty as citizens and their duty as followers of God. At the samo time Up announced a principle of universal appli cation to tho effect that both church and stato havo thoir own rcepectivo sphores and that each is absoluto in its own sphere; tho church has no right to bo political and tho stuto has no right to bo ecclesiastical. The reason tho pages of ecclesiastical history aro so stained with human blood is owing to the mistaken offorts of religionists to put together what Christ has put assunder. If tho Son of God would not stand between tho diabolical reign of Tiberius Crosar and its Jowifh subjects where is the Son of 2Ian that shall daro to intorfere with tho claims our country has upon its alien subjects? If thov cniov our hospitality and share tho protection our laws afford let it bo only on condition of rendering to our civil authority and institutions that which belongs to thorn. Tho cry of America for Americans is a most wholesomo ono when we understand by Americans those who aro Amoricans in allegiance and sympathy. It ought not, howevor, to be a question as to whether a man was born in America but as to whelhor America has been born in him. Wo have moro to fear from some of our nativos than from some of our foreigners. Only those who render unto America tho things that aro America's aro entitled to tho proud distinction of Amoricans in its truest senso. And this foreignizes many natives and Americanizes many foreigners. Tho man who renders unto God tho things that are God's i3 most likoly to render unto Cassar the tho thing that are Cassar's. Followers of God mako tho bost citizenB and patriots. No man who is false to God is likely to be true to mon. Many who prido themselves unon their loyally and patriotism aro wofully regardless of the claims of God. Patriotism can never become a substitute for piety. Patriotism can never savo the country without piety. Man bears the mage and superscription of God and there fore is, according to the Saviour's reasoning, bound to render himself to God if he would fulfil tho moasuro of his duly. Whon the groat massos do this our country will bo safe and not till then. It is "righteous nessnot Democracy nor Bepublicanism that exalteth a nation; and sin not mon archies or any other governmental system that is a reproach to any people." A Million Friends. HAD FAITH IN TUB LIMITED. From New York to a Chicago Court Iloora In Twenty.four Hoars. The perfection to which the art of rail roading has been carried in these days had a striking illustration last week in tho case of a prominent New York lawyor, who was a passengor on the Chicago Limited on tho Pennsylvania Bailroad. lie had an important suit pending In tho United States Court of Chicago, which was to be called at 10 o'clock on Tuesday morning. It was absolutely essential that ho should be thero on time, but on account of a pres sure of business he could not leave New York before Sunday. Tho alternative was thon offered him of taking a Sunday after noon train and sponding two nights on tho road, or of waiting until Monday morning and taking tho Chicago Limited, which would land him in Chicago at 9:45 on Tues day morning. Tho consequences might possibly bo seri ous if tho Limited should bo late in reach ing Chicago; but, trusting to its well-earned reputation for being always on time, the New Yorker decided to take it and run tho risk. Tho result showed that his con fidence was not misplaced. Exactly at 9:45 on Tuesday morning tho Limited rolled iu o tho Union Station at Chicago. Jump ing into a cab with his wifn tho lawyer was driven straight to tho temple of justice, where Judge Uresham presided. lie reached it in eight minutes, and a few moments later was in tho ccurt room. Tho court oponed promptly at ten o'clock, and his cuso wus called first on tho list. Just twet.ty.four hours alter leaving Now York ho was addressing tho court in Chlca go, feeling as fresh and vigorous after his luxurious trip as il he had just coroo from his uwn homo. It might add to the story to say that after concluding his argument bo tO-.k another train back to New fork and was in court there on Wednesday, as usual, but ho didn't, Unstayed in Chicago to tea tho Democratic Convention, and came back at his leisure Phila.
