CHICAGO'S GREED.
How the Tammnny Men IVero Imposed
Upon.
Odd etories aro told about tho experiences
of Tammany mon in Chicago during tho
Democratic National Convention. It
seems that tho general impression in Chi
cago concerning Tammany Hall was that
it was composed of dangerous and wicked
political thieves and robber, whoso monoy
was all procurod through stealing from
tho public purso. Under theso conditions
tbo Chicago saloon keeps, hotol proprietors,
barbors, haskmen and storekeepers looked
on them as fair game for plunder, and
charged noarly two prices for anything
that a man wanted who wore a Tammany
badge. "Wo woro told by Mr. O.
W, Kidgway, tho brother of District Attor
ney ltidgway, of Brooklyn, who is a mem.
bor of Tammany Hall and woro a Tarn.
many badgo in Chicago, that ovon at tbs
bars where liquors wero sold they chargod
a Tammany man twentyflvo conts for a
drink of whisky at tbo same timo that
they would soil two'drinks for a quartor to
any one olse. If complaint was made to
tbo cashier or "tho head barkoepor, tho
complainant was told : "Wo havo orders
to ch'argo an 'extra prlco to all Tammany
Hall heelers lor accommodations hern."
It is related of one of the big Tammany
leaders that he got ipto a barbur's chair to
havo his hair cut and was charged a dollar
for that operation. On bis expressing fur
prise at the charge tho barber said to him
that this amount Was their regular price
for cutting the hair of Tammany men,
whoroupon tbo Tammanyito replied: ' Oh,
my surprise was pot with referonco to tho
greatness of tbo price, but at its smallness
At home I pay my barber 52 for a hair cut
and give him 60 cents for himself." Tho
Tammanyito who1 thus got the best of the
barber is said to be John J. Scannell.
Anothor story of tho experiences of Turn
manyltos is that Bourke Cockrau took
a carriage to drivo with a friond to the do
pot when be was about to leavo the Lake
side city for tho metropolis, and being a
littlo late for tho train urged the driver to
push bit hursos. Ho bad some small bag.
gairo with him, and on arriving at the de
pot the Jehu demanded ?5. Tho big orator
objected, but tbo driver inslstod that ho
would call the police, and the experience
of tbo visiting Democrats with tho Chicago
pollco had been so unsatisfactory that Mr
Cockran paid tho price rather than have a
conflict with them.

strangest freaks. Tbosottlors term It the
pump snake." How It came thorn and
whoro It camo from is yet nnknown. It
first rflado Its appearanco In Emmous
county In tho spring of 1880. A full-
grown pump snake measures about slxteon
feet in lensth and about throe inches in
diamoter. They aro of groparious habits,
roaming tho prairies in largo hords, as
many as thn o hundred haying boon
counted in a single fluck. In dissecting ono
of theso roptilos there i found a tube
which extends from hei root of tho J-tw to
tho extremity of the tail and terminates in
an oroning. This tube Is about two inches
in dianiFtcr and lined with a toui;b, yield
ing' substnco similar t to rubber. Tho
pump snake is easily trained to answer the
call of man. Tbo inhabitants of this sec
tion trap tbom in largo numbors.
A farmer on Cat Tail Cieck has a flock
of twenty pump snakoi trained to a re
markable degreo of proficiency. At tho
Wait of a whistle tho snakes assemble on
tbo banks of tho creek. Tho leader (there
1 always a leader to a'hord of those snakes,
whp Is elected by a two-third majority)
dasbos into tho water of tho creek, leaving
only Iho oxtrcmity of his tail on thn bank
Another snake immediately grasps tho end
of the leader's tail in bin jtws, athlrdsnako
takes hold of the second snake's tall in a
similar manner, and so on, extending to
the water troughs in the cattle yards, throe
hundred foet away. Tho leading cntike

tho creek, which passes through tho long

The- agricu'turirttold of an extraordinary
circumstance wHch occurrd'd a short tlmn
ago. "While working in tbo Hold near his
homo he observed flames issuing from the
roof of his barn. W ild with oxcitemont,
he hurriod to the burning building only to
soo that it was u hupoless ta-k for himsolt
alono to attempt to extinguish the flames.
In despair ho guzed on thd destruction.
Suddenly ho beard a loud 'rustling in the
tall grapsj whonce Issued bis hord of pump
snakes on tho run. ''Tho loador burled
himself Into the creek1, the 'rest Instantly
adjusting themselves heads and tails from
tho crook to tbo burning building. The
last snako, standing on' its head, waived iti
long and floxible body from tbo tall of
which issuod a stream of water that was.
thrown with torrifio forco on the burning
building. Back and forth dashed the tail
end of tho living hoso, squirting tho water
whero it would do tho most good, whilo
tho fouct'pumping of tho leader could be

fifteo'n minutes tho last ' Bpark wad out.
Then',' and hot until then, did' the pump
snakes quit work. They were completely'
exhausted, the loador having fainted dead
away. Tho main part of tho building and
its contents wero saved. Thanks to the
prosonco of mind of theso wonderful
snakos.
