Think what It cost to manufacture Baking Powder f Did you ever think how baking pow der is sold? Did you ever think there must bo a large profit in it somewhere? The manufac turer of a certain baking powder pay out nearly a million dollars or more a year advertising their powder, trying to mako people believe it is the best made. Their baking powder is sold at 50c per pound. The retailer makes his profit, the jobber makes his profit, tho manufacturer makes his profit, and the consumer pays for all these and tho newspaper advertising also. What does it cost to manufacture tho powder? Other manufacturers give away 25 or 30 cents worth of china, glassware, toys, hardware, books, etc., with every pound of baking pow der. Again the query, what does it cost to manufacture tho powder can you think it out? You don't need to. GIrvin, Duncan & Waid ley have a few words on tho baking powder question. Until September 1 wo will sell Penn sylvania Halting Powder at TEN CENTS per pound. It doesn't concern you whether wo make or lose on it wo want to get it Intro duced. PLANTS AND FLOWERS ABUNDANT Tho Pastor of tho Church Delivers a Very Appropriate Sermon to tho Children "To Aro tho Light." UNDAY was observed as Children's day at too Methodist Epis copal church. The decorations wero olab orate yot chasto and reflected great credit upon tho committoo in charge of the work. In tho background of tho pulpit roce-s wb3 a ligbthouso to repro sont tho light of tho world. On either side was an anchor and n cross euiblomatic oi the christian's hopo and its foundation, B tweon thorn, and lurmounting a rockery, was a beautiful pillar of roses and lilies upon which a dove with outstretched wings was perched bearing tho olivo branch of peace, tjpical of reconciliation with God and the purity which follows. Those were supplemented with blooming planls, banks of roses and daisies, boquets, etc., tastefully arranged to present tho most pleasing effoct. At tbe morning service tho pastor de livered an appropriate sermon to tho chil dren from tho text: ' Ye are the light of the world." Tho lighthouse was usod as an object lesson to enforce tho teaching of tho hour. Light means talk. Jesus himself is tho light of the world, and we, liko the moon, shino in borrowed rays. In our sphere wo are to bo miniature Christ's moral lighthouses God's truth bearers and life givers. Upon our dangerous coasts are lighthouses exhibiting different kinds of lights which are striking reminders of dlfferont kinds of Christians. There are singlo and double lights, white and colored, fixed, flash and revolving so in tho chris tian worm, mo most uselul people aro those whoso light shines steadily. Light ning is very vivid but it is not best for 11 lumlnating tho storm tossed traveler, it rends the heavens and for an instant the glory of God seems to flash through tho rent only to mako tho darkness moro in tense So some people shine with dazzling splendor for a little while and then they aro no more. Thoy may attract moro at' tontion but thoy aro lets useful than the humble child of God whoso light ehinos less brilliantly but moro constantly. In tho evening an original programmo was well rendered in tho presence of an overflowing assemblage. There were reci tations by Misso3 Ilolon Prico, Emma Gunter and Mastor Eugono Titman; a reading by Miss Birdio Wasloy; duets by Misses Birdie Newhouserand LuluWators, Bella Brown and Mary Hooks, Gorlio Wmgg and Sadie Lingbam; quartoltos by Messrs. Hughes, Morgan, Crobaugh and Price, and by Messrs. Pr:ca, Crobaugh and Misses Morgan and Williams. Selections were aHo rendered by tho different de partments of tho Bchool and an address was delivered by the pastor. IN THE P. M. CHURCH. Children's Day Was Appropriately Ob served There Yesterday. Children's day was appropriately ob served in tho Primitive Methodist church yesterday by the rendering of a service of song entitlod, "Little Crusaders," by the scholars, assisted by the choir. Several recitations were given by tho scholars with good effect and tho choir sang some very pretty anthems. Pastor Proude gave a short but excellent address on the important part that, children take In life and the necessity of training them with care. Tho decorations were really beautitul and consisted of a pair of Golden Gates Ajar, revealing a splendid collection of plants in tho back ground. On the top ot tho gates was the toxt "Suffer tho Little Children to Come Unto Me" and tho massive sido walls wore represented by screens covered with laurel leaves. In front of the gales woro two beautiful ships, and over all was tho motto, "Wolcomo." Sovoral canarlos added to the music of tho ovoning. Groat praise is due to Marshall Baugh and corps of workers for tboir labors to mako the day a success, and judging by tho congregation that filled the church afternoon and ovon ing thoy sucoedod. THEY KEEP TO THE RIGHT NOW Many of tho Railroad Tracks Destroyed by tho Mahanoy City Flood Ropalr.ed All Trains Running. AILKOAD changes under the now Blad ing system are ttill going on. The latest went into effect on the lecal branch of tho Lohigh Valley divis ion this morning. Heretofore all trains of that division bo- twoon Quakako and Grten Itldeo have b.'on taking tho loft hand tracks, whilo tho trains on all other branches, includine all lines of tho Reading. Lihigh Vallov and Jersoy Central, have takon tho right hand tracks. The system is now uniform throughout and all trains keep to tho right. Under this change west bound trains take on passengers at tho local dopot from tho platform, whilo passongors east bound must cros3 the tracks to get on tho trainB. Thero was somo confusion at the depot this morn ing on account of the unexpected change, but tho public will become acquainted with the reversed order of things in a day or two. ... All the east bound trains on the local di vision of the Lehigh Valley road aro now running on regular schedule time, the tracks that were dostroy ed on the Mahanoy- Delano branch by tho bursting of the dam having been repaired. Tho upper tracks are not yet in condition and consequently all passenger, freight and coal trains run between this town and Delano via the Mahanoy City route. ... A well known resident of Mahanoy City was in town to-day and, in conversation rolativo to tho flood, said that he thought tho people who are speculating upon re covering heavy damagos from tho wator company that owns tho dam that caused tho flood will "slip up on it." Ho com pares tho bursting of tho Mahanoy City dam with tho Concmaugh disastor. "In tho Conemaugh case," said ho, "it was shown that tho dam was not properly built, but no ono eucceodod in recovering a cent of damages from tho owners. Sup poso tho other dam was not properly con structed, what bettor claim have the Mah anoy City pooplo to damages than tho Conemaugh peoplo had ? Another thing, tho peoplo who aro complaining and cry ing out for damages aro not tho real suf forors, Most of them aro people who do not own even chickon coops and aro mak log claims to satisfy a feeling of prejudice thoy havo against tho water company." V Speaking about homo investors reminds mo of tho expressions of a town gentloman Saturday night. He said: "This brewery boom makes mo eick. why if the ostah lishment of such a thing is dependent upon the establishment of public water works wo havo plenty timo to consider over the mat ter before we enthuse. The contracts for water works bave not boen advertised tor and a year must certainly elapse betwoen tho commencement and completion of the works, hence tho brewers who are now sup plying the town will havo amplo oppor tunity to arrange a prico for the beverage that will cause the browory boomors to put on ihoir thinking capj, I believe in home industries and am prepared to give them all encouragement, but thoy must have a bona fide appearance. If these brewery peoplo were sincere tboy could have put tbo pre lect on foot years ago, b?foro tho Mahanoy City pooplo thought of having a brew ery." .
