As early as 18C2 the freedom of the slaves
bocome apparent, when Lincoln Shi i, 'If
Lee is driven back from Maryland, I will

of the slaves. The battlo of Antietam was
fought September 17, 18C2. On Soptomber
18, 1802, Lee retreated across the Patomac
and was hurled back from Northern soil.
On September 22, 1802, Lincoln declarod
the froodom of the slavos in tho states and
parts of states that wore then in rebollion
to take place January 1, 1803. From that

Elmira and Buffalo. "Writing from tho
former place Mr. Boyor eays that a drive
through Buffalo with Mr. Ilarry Bonney
resulted in a revelation. Buffalo, ho says,
has had a wonderful growth during tho
past fifteen years. The city seems to bo
tho starting point and terminus for all
railroads, and tho shipping businoss on tho
lakes and canals is immense. Everything
except coal is cheap thoro, much cheaper
than the same articles are in Schuylkill

The parado was hoaded by carriages con
taining tho orator of the day, old soldiers
and flower committees of tho G. A. B. and
S. of V. Thirty-nino organizations wero
on tho programme issued by tho committoo
of arrangements and but ono or two failed
to appear. The Pottsvillo Military Cadets
took part in tho parado and made an ex
cellent impression with their tactics.
Co. A, Jr. O. U. A. M., of town, was also
in lino and made a very fine ap
pearanco. Members of the School Board
and Borough Council occupied seats in
carriages that brought up tho roar of tho
pirado. The routo of parado was out Oak
street to Whito, White to Coal, Coal to
'Jardin, Jardin to Cherry, Cherry to Main,
up Main to tho cemeteries, The observance
of tho day was ono of the most effective
ever witnessed in the town and tho com-
,mitteo of arrangements is entitled to great
jCredit. Tho flowers strewn upon the graves
wero abundant and very beautiful. Somo

pearanco.
