DIED AFTER AMPUTATION.
Mrs. Jacob Ilrandt Submits to a Scvero
Operation anil Hues not Survive.
The Wilkes-Barre Record of Monday
says Mrs. Celia, wife oi Jacob Brandt,
whose husband is proprietor of tho tobacco
store on South Main streot, near Public
Square, died Sunday morning after tho
mputation of ono of her legs above tho
knee. Some time ago a vory small sore,
not much larger than pin's head, appeared
on tho foot near the sole and no at
tention was paid to it. It kept on in
creasing and getting more painful and the
family became alarmed and summoned
physicians, who saw that something must
be done or blood-poisoning, and probably
death, would result. Thoy advised ampu
tation as the best course to take. This al
ternative seomed so hard that Mr. Brandt
determined to call on still another physi
cian and surgeon, one from New York and
he at once agreed with tho physicians of
Wilkes-Barre. On Saturday the leg was
taken off considerably above the kneo and
the sufferer bore up under tho shock right
bravely. But it was too severe, tho direaso
too lar advanced, and Sunday morning at
C o'clock she died. Blood poisoning had
resulted from tho gangrene and the ampu
tation, although a last resort, probably
would not have stayed tho progress of the
disease. Mrs. Brandt was 39 years of ago
and was a sistor of Max Reoso, of town,
who attended tho funoral at that placo
yesterday.
