dl'covery that lier lover had a wooden
leg led Maggie Williams to dismiss Wil
liam E. Cunningham, to whom she was
betrothed. Tho engagement was broken
Sunday night, the young woman up
braiding her lover for tho dccaptlon ho
had practised upon her. Yesterday
Cunningham visltod 25 Portsmouth
street, whero Maggie was employed as a
domestic, and asked her to shako hands
j and lruke up. Maggio refused to bo
reconciled to tho wooden leg and again
repulsed him.
Then Cunningham drew a revolvor
and fired two shots at his sweetheart,
ono bullet taking effect In her left tem
ple mid the other over the heart. Cun
ningham then placod the revolver at his

The polico summoned an ambulance
and hurried the victims ot the tragedy
to tho hospital. The girl died before
reaching the institution. Cunningham
is alive, but is mortally wounded. lie
would say nothing about the mntter

DR, HILL'S MURDER.

Wilmi.vcjton, Del., April 20. The
murder of Dr. John II. Hill, brothor of
Walter S. Hill, a commission merchant
of Now York city. In Kent county, Del.,
just across the Delaware Hue, by a gang
of negro desperadoes, has caused great
excitement.
Since the acquittal of a white man In
Kentcounty who was charged with mur
dering one of their race, the gang has
been bent on murder. Dr. Hill was
called to the bedside of Mrs. James
Shaw, who lives near Massey's Station,
live miles from Milllugton, where the
physician lived.
He responded to the urgont summons
at 10 o'clock ou Saturday night, but did
not reach his destination. He told hi s
wife lie would not be gone long, and she
waited for his return. At four o'clock
Rbe heard the noise of the dogcart as it
rolled up the lano to her homo. Tho
vehicle stopped, but her husband did
not appear.
Becoming alarmed Mrs. Hill went out
to see it there was any trouble. Prone
upon his face In the dogcart lay her hut
bund. Calling to him he gave no answer.
Her neighbor, J. P. Abren, responded to
her call for help, and they carried the
unconscious man into his home. It
was found that his throat was cut from
ear to ear. His head was crushed and
one foot was gone. Doctors was sum
moned, but Dr. Hill died at 8:45 yester
day afternoon without regaining con
sciousness. The Grant Monument Corf Stone.
New Yonic, April 20. Arrangements
for tho ceremony of the laying of the
corner-stone of the Qrunt Monument on
Wednesday next are nearly completed.
Qovernor Flower has ordered the
First Brigade of the Nntloual Guard
to participate In the ceremony.
A grand stand to accomodate 0,000 per
sons has been erected at Riverside Park,
and it Is thought that over 200,000 per
sons will be able to witness the cere
mony within the park inclosure. It Is
Btated that there will be at least 8,000
Qrand Army veterans In tho parade,
which is expected to bo large and impos
ing. t,
Think O'Mrlen l In Cuba.
New York, April 20. The belief Is
general among the authorities here that
the escaped bunco steerer O'Brien has
fled to Cuba. Inspector Steers Is firmly
of this belief. lie says that O'Brien Is
too foxy to come to this city. David
Dishler,the sporting man who is accused
of having assisted O'Brien in his escape,
is stopping at the Qllsey House, and
does not appear at all disturbed by the
fact that his name is prominently con
nected with O'Brien's escape.
Artist Ilradford Dead.
New Youk, April 20. William Brail
ford, the artist, who was stricken with
apoplexy at bis studio on Fifth avenue
last Wednesday, died yesterday. The
deceased was 70 years old, and had won
much praise through his paintings of
Northern scenery. He made several
trips to the urctio region, his last being
20 yenrs ago, when he was connected
with the exploring expedition headed by
Dr. Hayes. The body will betaken to
Fair Haven Mass., for Interment.

pondent of the "Times" says that a
great German authority has assured him
that the new Italian rifle la the best yet
introduced, being superior to the Lebel,
Mauser or Mannlicher, and that the Ital
ian army authorities, conscious of this
fact, are determined to go on manufac
turing the rifle, whatever sacrifice be
entailed, even the abandonment of the
African colony.

daughter, Mrs. Crocker, living at South

Escape of Tenement House Inmates.
Woossocicet, Conn., April 20. Tho
wooden pin-truss brldgo across the
Blackstono River at St. Paul's street, a
hair century old, which has been a mon
ace to the traveling public for some
yenrs, was burned early yesterday morn
ing. Tho flro was of incendiary origin.
The flames extended to the four-story
tenement block owned by Peter Maloney,
which contained nearly thirty persons.
Frank and Ohrlstopher Powell swam the
river and aroused the Inmates of Mo
loney's buildings. There would have
been great loss of life If the Powell
brothers had not taken the cold swim
they did.

Arrive No Trouble Experienced.
Cheyenne, Wyo., April 20. The train
bearing the 17th Infantry nnd tho Invad
ing stookmen left Douglass at 7 a. m.
and arrived at Fort Russell at 3:45 p. in.
When Deputy Sheriff Roliles attempted
to get aboard the stockmen protested
and he had to ride on the engine.
In compliance with orders from Gov.
Barber, the train was preceded by a
pilot engine and caboose. The latter
contained a section crew with tools to
repair any break In the track.
Two men with field pieces scanned the
track and country ahead from the look
out until Bordeaux, ono hundred miles
from Douglass, was reached, when dan
ger was considered past and tho pilot
engine was coupled onto the train and
helped haul It into Cheyenne.
There was no demonstration along the
route. Ranchmen and cowboys gazed
ot the train with longing eyes, but made
do attempt to aricst its progress.
Hundreds) ot people met the train at
Fort Russell, and clean linen was quick
ly provided for the prisoners. Tho Tex
ans were tho first to alight. Thoy are a
hard looking set, and tho stockmen
seem ashamed of them.
The party were escorted to the fort and
will bo confined iu tho guardhouse.
Judge Vandever and Walter R. Stoll
havo been retained for the defense. Tho
prisoners were not communicative, say
ing little to their friends.

Typhoid Fever In a Military Academy.
CnESTEit, Pa., April 20. Typhoid
fever is prevalent In the Pennsylvania
Military Academy. The third victim of
tho disease in tho Institution, Cadet
Burrel, of Little Falls, N. Y., died Sun
day night. An examination of the
building revealed nothing but the most
cleanly, healthy and well kept apart
ments and perfect sanitary system.
Medical experts havo secured some of
the water for analysis to ascertain If Im
purities lurk therein.
Cumplcte Accord With tha United Statos.
London, April 20. In tho Ildtiso of
Commons, Mr. Lowther, Parliamentary
Secretary for the Foreign Office, said in
reply to Mr. Bryce of Aberdeen, that
there was complete accord between tho
United States and Great Britain on the
question of a modus vlvendl In Behring
Sea, pending the consideration of the
Behring Sea question by the arbitrators.

Another Futile Flrctlnn In -Providence.
Providence, R. I., April 20. A third
nttompt to complete the city's represen
tation in tho Legislature proved futile
yesterday, and another trial will tako
place within 10 days. The vote was
light, being 1,500 less thnu at the second
attempt. Nine Representatives are yet
to bo chosen. Each trial costs the city
$3,000.
Fatal Fxnlosion in a Rollins Mill. 1
Alusntown, Pa., April 20. By the
explosion of a mass of hot cinders nt tha
Allentown Rolling Hills last night the
oil-house was set on fire, containing a
can of dynamite, which exploded. John
HcFadden was fatally injured, both eye-
being blown out. Jacob Delgley and
Jamos McMullon were seriously injured.

Philip Cunningham, a carpenter,

Henrietta, Tex., was almost wiped out

terday morning. Loss, $200,000.
Governor Flower has signed the bill
amending the consolidation act ot the
city of Elmira In many particulars.
From reports received from Central
New York It Is believed tho maple sugar
crop will be about half the average.
Thomas Tumbull, who died at Whit
tey, England, yesterday, was tho builder
of about 100 flrst class iron steamships.
An English syndicate have purohased
8,000 acres ot sapphire land near Hele
na, Mont. The alleged price Is $2,000,
000. Edward Gorman, aged 85, yesterday
blew out his brains with a shot gun in a
shed connected with his house at Mid
dlehope, N. Y.
The St. Joseph's German Cathollo
Church at Newcastle, Pa., was totally
destroyed by Are yesterday. Loss, f 10,
000; Insurance, $5,000.
Henry Schalle, an aged and wealthy
contractor of Pittsburg, Pa., shot him
self yesterday. Despondency, the re
sult ot a long sickness, was the cause.
Duluth, Minn., has interested English
capital in her development and has
made arrangements for great railroad
terminal facilities and new monster
docks.
Tho stock farm of Edwin I. Wells nt
Glonmore, N. J., with 23 head of high
priced horses nud Jersey cows, was
