Union when the Catholic Workman's
Benevolent Union celebrated the eighty
second birthday of Leo XIII. There
wero 0,500 present, The platform was

iastics, Mayor Grant and Archbishop Corrlgan
sat together. Letters of regrot wero
read from Cardinal Gibbons, Ex-Post-mastar-General

Ex-Mayor Grnco. Itesolutlons wero read
eulogizing tho encyclical of the l'opo.
Concerning tho temporal sovereignty tho
resolutions say:
" That ns members of tho church we
recognize His llolinosi, Leo XIII. is now
the duly elected, lawful and vbihlo head
and ruler thereof, and that to him alone
belongs tho right of administering the
temporal sovereignty of tho same and that
whoever elso Intrudes himself upon tho
territory ot that church, to nssumo con
trol thereof effects only a forceablo
usurpation and a sacrillglous violation
of the sovereign rights of tho church ;
therefore loyal Catholics can nover rest
content until that sovereignty bo so re
stored, that at least In Home, the Holy
Father may havo and enjoj an absolute

control." -
The resolutions were passed with
cheers and applause.

ernment as may seom to them proper
after a thorough investigation of the

The Mor Japanese Pottery.
Boston, March 8. Tho negotiations
for the purchase of tho celebrated col
lection of Japanese pottery, mads by
Frof. K. Morse, of Salem, havo finally
been concluded by bis acceptance ot the
sum of $70,000 for tho entire collection.
Prof. Morso is to remain curator of tho
collection for three years at . a salary.
It is also understood that he is to have
the privilege of selling the duplicates in
the collection, the exchanges to go into
tho collection.

Their father armed himself and went to

Hamburg, March II. Otto Itelmer, for
merly a deputy belonging to the Socialist
party, who was expelled from Germany,
owing to bis advanced idejis and utter
ances, and who lived for some time in
the United States, committed suicide yes
terday. He bud for years past beeu suffer
ing from an Incurable disease.
