GREAT ACTIVITY.
The TVunlilngion Gun Foundry Going 11
Hour 11 luy.
Washington, Jan. IB.1 Tho extraordt
nary activity- In the Washington Gun
Foundry has not abated nnd the force
there Is working twelve hours a dny in
Mead of eight, the legal limit. Frcpara:
tlons have been made to the end that if
necessary the entire plant can be run ,for
twenty-four hours, without stopping, by
means ol three shifts of men, each work,
iiifr ptalit. hnlira.
The officials at the Navy Department
say that no orders have yet been given to
that effect, but all Is. in readinebs for; the
twenty-four hour system, It s expected
that in a week the yard will be going
both night and day.
Much depends, it is said, upon the do
vclopments of tho Chilian controversy.
and by the end of next week, the entire
aspect of things may be so changed as. to
render such speed unnecessary, but .the
officers at tbe Department think that thl
will not be the case..
Hurry at the AVatervllflt ArsenaL
TnoY, N. Yi( Jan. 15. The reeling in
Washington that a war with Chill, is
possibility if not a probability, is re
flected In the extraordinary activity at
the Watervliet Arsenal, or Government
Gun Foundry, as it is now called.
Orders have been received by th
foundry officials to complete all orders
for the big guns with the greatest pos
s(ble dispatch,, and the rumor about the
works is that the orders were accom
panied' by tbe admission that a necessity
for the use of the guns1 was expected al
most any day In view of the Insolent at
titude of' Chill. Every man who can be
utilized Is now at work.
It Is significant that the final polish
and fancy finishing touched to" tho guns
are left unauue. Serviceable and nqt
elaborately finished ones are needed.
This has not been done since the rebel
lion. There are now being built thirteen
eight-inch, guns, that are each twenty
two feet long. These thirteen guns will
not undergo the polishing process at all.
The paint will bo applied over .the rough
surface of ho steel.
