AsnvMir. Deo. 24. The loss of life
occasioned by the explosion of tho cargo
of tho French ily namltoBhlp I greator
than was at first u ppofed, although
this exact number of killed will nover
be known, f or tho oxplosion must have
k Med many strangers about the ship
anil about tho quay where tho shattered
vassal wasmooroil.
The ship was found by fishermen In
tho North Sea, abandoned, and with
20,000 kilos of dynamite on board. Tho
fisherman towed the derelict to the
rlvor In Antwerp. On arriving at the
wharf they, knowing that dynamite was
not allowed to be kept In any veisol a t
tho docks In Antwerp, pretended to ua -load
all that was on board for speedy
removal. They concealed half the dy
namite, however, on the vend, Intend
ing to smuggle It Into town, and niako
a largo pioflt on the sale. Ono of tho
flshormeu, who wis nervous on account
of tho doudly character of the stuff,
dropped In the hold a pnekage, which
he had picked up for smuggling.
Immediately a most terrlllc oxplosion
occurred.
'lho horrors of tho scene oan hardly be
described.
Crowds of peoplo surrounded the
ruined district Immediately aftor tho
explosion. The number soon Increased
to such au extent that troops had to
be sent for to maintain order and allow
tho searchers to attend to their work.
Fragments of the ship, Intermixed
with human remains, aro scattorod hero
nnd thore about tho scono of tho explo
fclon. Shattered legs and arms, hands and
feet, bonds anil other portions of human
bodios, are scattered about on all sides,
and aro boing gathered up in barrows
by polico and workmen sent to the spot
by lho municipal authorities.
The neighboring wharvos ore strown
with dcbrli besmeared with blood and
mixed with pieces of human ilesh.
Wheelbarrows full of plocos of dead
bodios have been taken away.
Tho quay is greatly damaged.
There aro the usual strange freaks of
explosion rocordod. One of tho ship's
masts is said, by people who witnessed
the explosion, to have boon shot up,
hundreds of foot Into tho air, and to
linva fallen down, like an arrow. It
Is now said to be atuck deep In tho mud
of lho harbor.,
Auothor portion of wreckago was
hurled through tho walls of n house,
making a hole similar to that which a
uholl flrod out of n heavy gun would havo
made.
A hnmnn head was found two
liundred yards from whore tho ship
blew up. It had landed on the root of
n house and then rolled Into tho street
below. Of cours o, It was c rushed be
yond recognition.
One man was killed by aBhlp's block,
which passed entirely hrough his body.
The force of tho oxplosion was bo
creat that tho whole neighborhood
fcuomod to rook nnd tromblo. Kvery
window within tho sweep of the conoua
Mon was shattorod; doors were blown In
nnd crushed as If by battering rams,
neoole nt a codsldorablo distauco from
tho quay where the ship blew up were
wept oil their feet and hurled, b rulsed
ami bleeding, lor yarns.
llnny nro soiovorely injured that they
canuot recover Irom tneir injurios;
many others are badly cut by falling
glass and by falling pieoes of tho wrock

Tho remains of 35 bodies havo been so
far discovered, nnd it is expected that
many mnny moro will bo found in tuo

Lawyer Wilkle had proparod to pre
sent a grent amount of cumulative and
corroborative evidence In tho proof of
Edward M. Jfleld's Insanity.
It may bo notod that tho testimony of
tho distinguished expsrts Is very strong
and. In fact, cumulative in the main.
Tho evldenca presented by Dr.' Carlos
F. McDonald, President of tho Lunacy
Commission of the btnto, stripped ot
unimportant matter, Is substantially as
follows I
"I have seen and examined Mr. Field
twice, "my examinations lasting up
wards ot two hours eaoh time, aud as a
result of these examinations, 1 have
formed the conclusion in reference to
his mental condition that he is at pros
ent insane, tho particular form being
melancholia. I am convinced that ho
was absolutely free and frank in his OX'
amlnation, and that evidences of feign
ing were wholly wanting. The physi
cal conditions are those that would bu
found accompanying the mental condi
tions found."
Dr. Allen Fitch's testimony as to
Fiold's condition sustains Dr. MoDon-
aid's.
Dr. Frank H. Ingram, who was form

Dr. Ingram's otuer siaicmenut

Mrs. K M. Field followed. She had
to be eunnorted to the witness stand.
Rev. Charles Cuthbert Hall, of Brook
lyn, stood beside her as she testified,
and her voice choked as she told the
story of her husband's eccentrlo actions
for two voars nasi.
He had becomo very moroso nnd 111

Is a lunatic und is not responsible for
