New YoiiK, Nov. 21. The body oi
"William J. Florence lies nt the Fifth
Avenue Hotel, where tho comudinn had
made hi homo for tho past thirty years.
It will romaln hero until Monday at 11
o'clock, when tho funeral will tako
place from St. Agnes' Church. Tho in
terment will be In tho family vault at
Greenwood. Mrs. Florenca is now on
her way home, having sailed on the
Auraula.
There Is no ond now of atorlos about
Mr. Florence, and tho pranks he played,
Florence, Ned Sothorn, Nelse Seymour
and Dan Iirynnt were a quartette who
made fun whorever thoy went.
At one time Floronce and Sothorn
were both playing in St. Louis Flor
ence in "The Mighty Dollar" and Soth
crn in oither "Dundreary" or "Drothor
Sam. " In the midst of one of Florence's
bot scenes who should appear on the
stage but Sothorn, who had tukon ad
vantage of a half hour off in his own
play to make a public visit to his friend.
The next night Florence called upon
Sothorn in the mime way, and both au
dience saw a double performance much
to their delight. At another time,
when Florence knew that Sothorn was
to be in St. Louis, ho advertised for
1,000 bulldogs to be left at Duudreury's
door.
Florence used to say tho first practi
cal joko that wus ever played on him
was tho means of getting him out of a
scrapo, and he folt kindly toward that
form of wit'ovor sinco.
It was when he was a lad, playing
minor comedy parts In a lirondway thea
tre at $10 a week, lie thought ho was
madly in love with a young actress at
work for tho same stipend. During tho
play one night he invited her to take
8oa.o oystors after tho performance.
Then he rushed to hio lodging, changed
bis clothes, mot her and took her to an
oyBter house.
Ills bill thero was $1.00, but unfortu
nately he found he had loft his money
in his othor clothes. Tho waiter and
the proprietor both said his story was
too diaphanous, and made him givo up
his watch uud his father's rinthat he
wore. Just then a whitohalrod, bonevo-lont-looking
old geutloraan came out of
ono of tho private dining compartments
they used to have in those duys and
thundered at the proprietor:
'Give that youth back his watch and
chain and ring. Let me pay his bill.
You ought to be ashamed, sir. Anyone
cnu see this is an honost youth aud his
companion is a psrfuot la ly. The girl
was in tears. I will pay the bill and
never sot foot in your place again."
Out in the street Florence was over
come with gratitude.
"Givo me your addross, sir," said he
to thu kindly old gentleman. "I will
roiuni you the money to-morrow.
"Oh, never mind," said tlio philan
thropist, "that was a counterfeit $20
bill I handed to tlu ol l fool. It was
worth nothing, nud gave nu $18 10
change for it Tint's the way 1 make
my living. Goo I u a'lt. "
Didn't Pay tho Ront.
A teacher in ono of tho Sundny pchools
of town tolls n laujrhablo experience- he had
recently, ilo had chargs of a lot of boys
ono day, and was trying to ma'to them un
derstand that all good omos from ono
source. As an illustration ho told thorn
of building a houso, putting water pipes in
with spinots in all tho rooms, thoo pipes
not being connoclod wllh tho main in tho
street. lie said to thorn:
"Supposo I turn on a eplgot and no wator
O in: oh, what Is tho ma' tor?"
Ho naturally supposed that some of tho
boys would answor that tho water was not
turned on at tho main,
Hut thoy didn't.
On tho contrary, ono boy at tho foot of
t io claar.oalled out in a voico which ehowod
that ho thought that be was right :
"You didn't hvo your water ront paid."
