Knoxvillk, Nov. 8. At 12:45 o'clock
yestorday morning tho guard of the con
vict Btockads at the Big Mountain mine,
five mile north of Ollvor Springs, heard
a knocking and threatening voices at a
door at the southeastern ond of the
fortification. At 1 o'clock 105 murderers,
thieves and highwaymen were Hying over
the mountains, guided by tho great blnz
lng lira of the woodon fort. Thus the
miners fulfilled tholr threat of Ave
months ago.
Tho last convict ha9 left tho Waldon's
Ridge mining region. The stockades
are dismantled or burned, and more than
450 desperadoes roam tho mountains
ml villi of Northeastern Tennessee.
I Through the acts of these miners vio
' . ... -. . , H. - 1
aid them, the government and the peo
ple of Tennessee find themselves faced
by a complicated and perilous situation.
Gov. Buchanan has confessed that ho
does not know what to do, and for once
men of ah parties are In sympathy.
The situation is this : An armed and
organized body of men has marched un
opposed through a considerable part of
tho State, has demanded and received
tho surrender of tho Stato's property,
has released the State's prisoners con
victs of the worst stripe yet it Is Im
possible to pursue or face this small
army of revolutionists, because this
army molts away as complotoly as if it
nover existed whon It has struck a blow,
and then reassembles siloutly, ready to
strike the next blow.
It Is fully armed and organized, per
haps tho best equipped corps of sharp
shooters ever got together; yot the
names aud humoi and identity of tho
leaders and privates are unknown. Tho
whole Incident is unique, even in the
history of labor agitations. It was set
on foot by workiomoa for tho llvos of
themselves, tho living of their families,
and this phaso of the allan- makes thu
other side of a question which at first
seoms to illustrate only their reckloss
noss In froelntr criminals.
Th o Governor's oiler of rewards Is
woll enough, people beyond this district
are savins, hut tho Governor will
never cot any rosults from that,
and it does seem impossible that any
arrests o-tll bo made in that way. It is
thought that tho Governor has hired de
tectives from Now York and Chicago to
como down and ferret out tho loaders of
tho mob, but If thoy aro arrested no ono
will now doubt that tho mountaineers
will take rovengo.
