MR. COVILLE AS A SPIGOT

S llrs. Coville Iim been ailing ever sittoe
last glimmer. She wis not down sick bo
na to ileinnml the attention of the doctor.
Imttlie wm debilitated. A general weak
neis seemed to envelop her like rt clond
liolding her muscles in abeyance, mak
ing her feel to a degree helpless, but giv
ing her no pain. She did her household
wonc without Help, but there was no
lovo for the work, nnd sho carried no
tpirlt into it. A week ago a German
friend of Mr. Coville told him that if his
wife drank n glass of lager beer before
well meal she would soon derive a de
cided benefit. Mr. Coville lost no time
in getting a keg of the article, and in
forty-eight hours after had it in his eel
lar. The German told him how to tap
It, viz., drive the spigot against tho cork
in the hung, and thus force the cork in
side while the spigot filled the bunghole.
After dinner Mr. Coville attended to
this matter. He put the spigot against
the cork, hit two smart raps with a ham
mer and tho cork was driven in, but un-
fortnimtely he letcoof the spiirot before
it was well settled, and there being a
veryheavy pressure to the beer it was
thrown from the barrel and carried to the
other end of the cellar, while the liquor
shot vehemently forth. Tho first thought
of Mr. Coville was to save the beer, ami
with that object ho thrust his thumb
into the opening, after getting his sleeve
to the armpit and his bosom, face and
hair deluged with the ilnid. This was a
success, and for a moment Mr. Coville
plumed himself upon it. Then como the
realization that while the beer was safe
it was only at iris personal inconvenience
in the character of a spigot, n light he
Jtau never before considered himself in,
and which did not now bring him the
most elevating ot emotions.
On the contrary, Mr. Coville was in
cllned to resent his situation as something
forced upon him against his will, and
s being entirely foreign to bis hopes and
plans in this life. He was down in the
cellar alone at one end of the cellar,
while the spigot was at the other, in
Bight, but as fur removed from him a if
it floated in the middle of the Caspian
sen. He could hear some movement up
stairs and a sort of rumbling sound like
the movement of a body over tho floor,
mid ho shouted aloud for aid.
Now it is a singnlar fact that whilo
one can henr a voico ordinarily dolivored
in another room, the loudest scream
from him will not roach the owner of
tho voice, if Mr. Coville waB not be
foro aware of this fact, ho was mado to
realize it now. Shout after shout as
cended from the cellar, while the pain
in Ills thumb crept up his arm, and the
beer oozed from his hair and dripped
silently from his faco. It was n time to
think, and Mr. Coville tried to think
oalmly and dispassionately, but as the
sounds from nbovo assumed a more
definito shape, and gradually communi
cated to his mind that his son nnd licit
was making a rapid circuit of tho dining
room a-straddlo of a chair or somo other
object, which improvised animal he was
stimulating to the highest possible speed
by sundry cries of an encouraging na
ture, his mind lost its power of concen
tration, and tho atmosphero of tho cellar
liecamo sensible of being disturbed by
other Bounds than thoso directly appeal
ing for help.
In fact, Mr. Covillo was mad; stark,
Btaring, raving mad. In so far as the
rolo of a spigot would permit, Mr. Co
ville jumped up nnd down, and wiggled
his body and contorted his fuoa. Final
ly tho strength of purpose, hitherto nour
ished by the coutomplativo cost of the
beer, oshansted the nourishment, nnd
thus exhausted itself, and wrenching his
thumb from the barrel tho unhappy man
started for the stairs, being materially
aided therein by the force of the escap
ing beer, which caught him fairly in the
back of the legs as he turned to go.
Mr. Coville may not have had nny
definite puriwse in View when ho clawed
his way up the Stairs, but 011 reaching
tho dining room and discovering tho
hope of his lifo praucing about on tho
back of a prostrato chair, with a face

struggling and tortured mind fastened
on mis circumstance with electric speetl.
Tho flavor of camphor whicll is dis-
tilled from young Covillo as ho moves
about since then would lead a stranger
to infer that a faroninna ntlnnl from mil
iirinv of ninths wm mnmuntrilv Mirnof
nruiy oi motns was uiomenurily throat-
cning tho unfortunato youth, and was
nvertetl only through the united efforts
of tifteen alert and uncompromisinc
drtlKirists.
