John Gowanski Within an Inch of
Death.
John Gowanski, a Hungarian nearly 70
years of age, had a most rcmarknblo es-
enpo from doath on tho Philadelphia and
Reading railroad Sunday evening. As tho
passenger train duo horo shortly after 5
o'clock was passing Shonandoab City col
liery tho otigineor noticed a man on the
track in front of tho Koad's houses. Tho
whistlo was blown, but tho man tecmod
unablo to got upon bis foot. IIo was
in a kncoling position between tho two
tracks, bis kneos reeling on tho odgo of the
sills supporting tho rails upon which tho
train was running. Tho ongincer con
tinued to blow tho whistlo and revorscd his
engine, but was unuble to stop tho train
boforo roacbirg tho man. G iwanski suc
coedpd in kooping his body in an upright
position nnd as tho train passed him bis
faco acrapod along tho sido of tho cars.
The incidont caused great excitomont on
tho train, as none of tho passengers doubted
that tho man would bo killed. As tho last
car passed him Gowanski foil across the
rails. After the train was stopped some
passengers wont back to tho prostrate form,
Thoy found the man badly Intoxicated and
when his true condition was learned they
marvolod that ho had succeeded in main
taining an upright position until tho train
passed. It was cortainly ono of tho most
narrow escapos.
