Roberts, a minor, residing In George
town, committed a most brutal assault
upon his wife early In the morning while
In a drunken frenr.y.
He strnck several blows with his fists
and tho woman fled to tho streot. He
followed her, and when in the roadway
he picked up a huge stone and struck her
upon tho hoad, crushing her skull. She
ran back into tho house and fell uncon
scious upon the floor. Here the brute
picked up a basoball bat and dealt hor
several blows upon the1 head and body.
Tho woman was in a frightful oondltlou
when found by neighbors some tiiuo
later, and cannot lecover.
Roberts was arretted. While on his
way to jail he made an unsuccessful at
tompt to commit suicide.

the old Cinquo Port of Sandwich. Tho
Htour, n river which has, perhaps, moro

an old channel near Its confluence with
I'og-woll bay, laying bare a wreck which
has probably occupied Its present posi
tion for several centuries. Tho vessel
is ono of foreign build, nnd tho wood Is
In a fair state of preservation, owing to
tho fact that it lias for many years been
entiroly ombedded In tho sand. On In
spection It would nppour that, from
tlmo to tlmq, various attempts had been
mado to out down tho wreck, but tho
hull of tho vessel Is as yet pretty nearly
Intact. It is a matter of local history
that a little over thrco hundred years
ago, In tho reign of Henry VIII., an
Italian vessel, belonging to ono of tho
popes, sank at tho entrance of tho thoD
nourishing port of Sandwich. Tho sand
silted round It, forming a great bank,
and blocking up tho entrance to tho
haVen, nnd It is recorded that, from this
date, tho prosperity of Sandwich aa a
seaport greatly declined. It is believed,
with some show of reason, that tho
ancient wreck now discovered Is Identic
al with tho papal Caryko, or Carrlck,
which sank at this spot In tho reign of
Henry VIII.
