Charles IJnnanis was born in bmal-

ish. The boy's attention was turned
toward the natural sciences. In theso
he soon began to distinguish himself.
In 172H lie was under tho instruction of
tho great Celsius, for whom ho lectured
at the university, lie started on his
famous trip through Lapland May 21,
1732, and took a Jong journey through
northern Europe, llo published his
great work, "Tho System of Nature,"
in Holland in 1733, anil lived to scq tho
twelfth edition of that epoch-marking
volume greatly amplified in the hands
of his fellow echolnrs. "Tho First
Principals of Botany" wh written

went to England and was invited to
lecture in Oxford university, lie de

steady, research and lecturing in thu
