London, July 1. Advices just received
from Sierra Leone say that the vigilant
suppression of tho slave trade along tho
ooast nnd the consequent inability of tho
warlike races to dispose of their captives
at n profit lias caused a revival in tho
most terrible form Of the scenes of
slaughter nnd bloodshed which formerly
made ovory ohtef town of tho interior a
Golgotha.
Cooinaasie, it is snid, hns again wit
nessed tho killing of as many as 200 vic
tims in one day, and tho death drum is
heard in the streets even more frequent
ly than before tho Bvltlrili Ashonteo ex
pedition, when it was hoped such scenes
were put to an end forever.
Tho savage Wangarus recently mado
a raid into IMgombii, completely devas
tating tho villages, and carrying off over
2,000 captives. They wore unablo to get
rid of the prisoners as slaves, and hold a
sncrlflce feast, which lastod three days,
in which overy enptivo perished, not
even children being spared.
It Is universally admitted In the scttlo
iiouts that the approaching extinction of
the slnvo trade in Western Africa is
miking warfare nioro merciless than it
lsed to be.
LOOKING FOR POISON,
Slcltoiiry's Life Wan Insm-ml for Over
rivn Million Dollars.
London, July 1. It appears that tho
exhumation of McIIenry's body, with a
view to examination for poison, was dona
for the reason time lleHeury's Iifo was
insured for over $5,000,00 0 in various
companies in England and America. Tho
companies, or some of thorn, suspect sui
cide by poison, which would void the
policies.
It was intei'Jcd to conceal tho fact of
the exhumation, at least until after tho
result of tho analysis of the stomach
was ascertained, and to koep tho secret
forever, should 110 poison ho discovered.
The analysis will be completed about tho
end of tho week.
The friends of McIIenry scout tho idea
of suicido, and are indignant at tho imb-
l liclty given to tho case.

New Yohk, July 1. Tho business
failures for tho flwt six months of tho
present year aro reported by It. Q. Dun
& Co. to number 0,074, as against 0,885
in tho same period of 1890.
The increase of 080 failures is unusual
ly large. The extent of tho liabilities is
also excessive. -The amount owed by
the parties who havo failed in 1891 foots
up to $92,000,000, while for tho saiiio
period ill 1890 they wero only $03,000,
000, indicating an iucreaso in liabilities
of $27,000,000.
Notwithstanding tho oxtromo oxtonts
of these casualties and other adverse
circumstances, tho reports from all por
tions of tho country indicate a fairly
healthy condition of trade, and excellent
prospects in viow of tho laro increase of
wealth from (rowing crops and active
industrial enterprises.
