ItatMN, June lit). Cimsiderablo oxclto

cities over tlio reported outbreak of the
disease known as bl.tck-pox nniong the
Jewish lefuoo.s from liussla.
Tho disease Inn alroiuly.sprc.nl to Gor
Uiau residents near the frontier, where
most of tho Jowh cross over, and great
consternation is fell wherever it has
made Its appenr.tnue. The disease iHsaid
to be entirely different from the "black
death," which destroyed many persons In
Ireland In tho early p.irt ot lUitO, and
which had Its origin lu the K.ist, al
though too two discuses nre somowhat
similar In their outward symptoms.
The black-pox Is said lu Im the result
of the horrible squalor and lilth lu which
many of the Immigrants oxist at homo,
ond its breaking out is partly consequent
on tho privations to which they have
been subjected.
The (jqrinan health authorities every
where are keeping a vigilant outlook to
prevent the spread ot the disease from
the immigrants, against whom, as far as
possible, a quarantine is maintained un
til they are safely shipped to New York.
At Hamburg and Bremen the immi
grants are quietly taught by friends not
to say anything about Itussln on their
arrival lu America, but to claim that
they wero Austrian or German subjeots.
In this way they liopo to oscapo tha
scrutiny likely to bo bestowed on th
JKusslan Jews.
