WHITE 1'KAKB AND DARK CANONS.
Colorado Is a land of shaip contrasts, ol
brilliant lit lite, ol intense shadows; a land
where heights and depths make obvious the
meaning of the word antithesis; a land where
every mood in mlud can and an answering
mood In nature. The high, white minarets of
the mountains, from whoso slender pinnacles
tloat the wind-blown banners oi tho snow, ap
peal with silent eloquence to the lolly ueplra
ilonsof the soul; the sombre chasms cleft by
Titan forces through granite-hearted hills
within whose depths dark shadows throng
and swirling torrents dashspeak to the heart,
a language that thrills, lnspiresnnd awes. It
does not follow that thete glories ol white
peaks nnd those glooms of dark canons pre
clude tho pleasant Intervals, the sunny
meadows or the secluded nooks wherein the
tired inind or wearied body may find pence
ful rest and relugo from turmoil nnd toll. To
ono making a Journey In Colorado, New
Mexico or Utah, or taking a transcontinental
tour lrom East to West, or vice versa, the Den
ver uud Hto Grande itallroad oilers accom
modations equal In elegance.convenfence aud
luxury to those of any other line with the ad
ded attractions of the unrivalled scenery
along 1U line, abounding In a magnificent
opulence oi wuue peuss huu auric canons.
The mouUi of November, IH'M, wltucssed one
of the most Important Improvements In rail
road lacllltles that has yet been made In Col
orado nnd tho West. The completion of the
standard gauge of the Denver and ItloGrande
Itallroad lrom Denver, Coloiado, over the
mountains to Ogdeu, Utah, which Ave years
ago was deemed an Impossibility, Is certainly
n triumph of daring and engineering skill.
The new lino Is by the way of Leadvllle, tun
nellng Tennessee Pass, threading the canons
of the Kngle and Grand Hlvers, giving a view
ol the Mount of the Holy Cross, enroute, tak
ing Its trains through Glenwood Bprlngsand
down tho Grand Jtlver to Grand Junction,
thence to Halt Lake City, Ogden and Wau
Francisco. Ily this route one Is given an op
portunity to behold the magnificence of Eagle
Hlver Canon aud the marvelous beauty and
grandeur of the Canon of the Grand. The
overland train Is a model In every respect.
From the engine to the last first-class coach
everything Is bright and new, and of tho
most elegant style of workmanship and
finish.
If any reader desires to know more about
these stupendous works of nature, wrllo to H.
K. Hooprr, General l'assenger Agent,Denver,

THE BUSY BEAVER,
An Animal That Ib Growing
Scarcer In Thla Country.
tlcinnrkable Fcts Performed by Thorn
In the Construction of Their
- Dams Their Food
and Habits.
So much n'as been vrltten nbout tho
habits of tho benvor thnt almost cvory
ono knows something about tho nn-
imal, anil everybody Is acquainted
with the fnot that It builds clams and
housos to dwell In, says rt writer in
Forest and Stream. Tholr dams nro
exceedingly strong; and durable and
thoy nro prompt in repairing any In
Jury to them. A dnm cut during; tho
day will usually be rcpairetl tho snmo
night, and In the morning will bo aB
good as new. I remember an instanco
of this sort which occurred on San
Juan island. An old Englishman
named John Wootton, who was now to
tho country, wished to got rid of a col
ony of beavers thatllved on his place,
and ono day cut tholr dam. lhe next
morning he found it repaired, and out lb
again; and this tlmo to frighten away
tho animals when they should oomo to
rebuild it, ho set up a green Cottonwood
polo on the dam and hung his overcoat
on It. Tho following day on visiting
tho place ho not only found tho dam In
its usual good condition, but tho ootton
wood polo and his overcoat had gone to
help stop tho gap ho had made and
wore now in tho dam.
Iieavor housos are less common now
than thoy used to bo, partly because
boavers themselves aro less abundant,
but mainly because tbo presenco of a
fresh beaver house betrays to tho most
unskilled oye tho oxlstcnco of beaver In
tho neighborhood. In tho older dl
trlcts beaver now gcnorally live in holes
in tho banks of tho Etroams they In
habit, though In some parts of tho
Itoclcy mountains and in many places
ou this coast tho sight of a beaver
house Is not uncommon.
They aro nover placed In very doep
water, for a base must be btillt for tho
house to stand on reaching up to tho
surface, slnoe the chamber Inhabited by
tho ooeupantB must bo dry. Tho shapo
of those houses whloh I have seen oh
tbe shore approaches tho conical.
Those in the water aro more Irregular,
sometimes only rounded, at others
long and rather flat on top. Within
each house, and connected with tho
wqter by a concealer passage, through
which the beaver nass to and fro. Is the
ohamber which is tho animals' dwelling
place It is large onough to conta;n
soven or eight of them, and high
onough so that a beaver can convenient
ly sit up on his haunches. It is warm,
dry and clean, for tho beaver is ox-
tromoly neat In all its habits.
Tho food of tho beaver consists chief
ly of tho greon bark of twigs antl
young limbs of various trees. Cotton
wood baric is preferred, then comes
willow, then alder, but tho bark of al
most any treo may bo eaton. I have
known thorn to eat pine and whlto
cedar. Tho beaver often outs down
trees of very considerable size to got at
tho smaller limbs, which thoy cat. I have
soon cottonwoods twenty inches in
diameter so cut, and onco on Vancouver
island, near Johnston's straits, found n
ocdur two and no-half f oet through
which thoy had gnawed down. This
work of cutting down a largo treo is
done by a single animal. I have seen
tho boaver engaged in tho operation.
which is performed as follows! Tho
beaver sits up on its haunches facing
the tree, and with its forcpaws rostlng
against it. With his head turned on
ono side ho outs a groove abovo and
then ono below and bites out tho chip,
talcing it off In almost the samo way an
axman would, no thus savos himself
tho trouble of gnawing all tho wood up
Into flno cuttings. Whon tho tree la
felled tho whole community attack and
cut up tho tender limbs, carrying thorn
away to the cache.
TJnliko many of our gnawing animals,
tho beaver does not sleep through tho
winter! ho remains aotivo, ofton ven
turing abroad during tho whole of tho
oold weather. Ho must therefore havo.
food, and a largo part of tho summor
and autumn Is devoted to securing this1
food and depositing It In caches. This'
food consists of tho limbs and twigs of
tho trees most preferred by tho boaver,
They aro out from ono and a half to!
three feet long, stripped of their loavosj
and smaller twigs, Carried to tho wator
and floated to tho cacho, whero Uiey aro
sunk. And hero comes a very ourlousj
point. '111060 stioits aro lloatedto tho
cacho and aro sunk by tlw beaver to tho
bottom of tho water, whero thoy remalni
without any apparent anchorage. Thoy
aro not stuck, in tno mud of tbo bottom,
nor hold down by weights. If you lift
ono to tho surface It will float, but you;
may movo It about on tho bottom with'
out Its rising.
I havo myself tried this with sticks;
from which tho bark has been eaton,,
but havo never done so with green un-l
peeled limbs before tho beaver had!
lanen mem into tneir nouses, 'inis'
matter to mo is a very mysterious ono,i
and I have never been ablo to got anyf
hint as to how thoso sticks woro sunlL
All through tho winter tho beaver visit
theso caches, oarry tho Bticks to tholr
houses whero they eat off the bark, re
turning tho bare sticks to tho wator.
Sometimes it may happen that for some;
reason or otner, tno cache may not con'
tain onough to lost tho wholo winter,
In this case tho boaver, If possible, got
on land through some air hole or piece
of open water nnd then forago among)
tho timber. Occasionally a com'blnaq
oblige tho colony to cralgrato during
the winter to somo more f avorablo spot.
Nuture's Work.
There Is u curious freak of nature to
be seon along tho road loading from At
glcn to Cooiiranvlllo, Pa. Two trood
sized streams of wator meet atrightl
ngics on almost lovol ground, eacni
jhaving o heavy fall In reaching tho
jpoint. -i uo wator of both streams moot,
but neither la Impeded In its course.
Thoy cross llko two roods and continue!
In their respective beds.
It has been said the' body of a human
bolng is renewed once In seven yeors,
; but.strango to say, any foreign substanco
on It, such as pimples, lolls, tumors,
cancers, etc., remain. Tho reason is
that they aro diseases and are fed nnd
kept alive by Impure matter In tho blood.
Itwlllbeseen at onco that a cure can
S only be accomplished by purifying tho
blood. This being done thoy dio for
want of support. Many of the herbs to
be found In tho vegetable kingdom pos
sess tho power to so cleanse tho blood,
nud, when combined with certain vita
lizing chemicals nro a power for good.
