Country Newspapers in Europe.
In England and on the Continent the
smaller daily paper as it is known in
America is practically non-existent,
This seems to be due principally to two
causes ; first, short distances and fast
trains, bringing the cities in close touch
with outlying districts ;®econd, the ex-
nate everything, even in the matter of
news. :
The greater part of France can be
reached from Paris within a few hours,
nd the same is true of England and
London. Vienna, Berlin, Paris, Mad-
rid, London, St. Petersburg—each of
hes capitals furnishes more news to
the world than all the balance of its
respective nation. :
It is interesting to note how the dif-
ferent papers reflect the character of
heir readers. In England the general
tone of reading matter is staid, con-
servative, with a _ strong leaning to
wards the traditional. In Paris it is
excitable, sensational, radical. In Ger-
many there is the same slow, esasy-
wsoing thoroughness and regard for one
definite idea which permeates their
daily lives, while in Italy the papers
show very clearly the careless, pleasure
loving indolence of the people,
Unquestionably one of ihe greatest
~afety valves of the American nation is
he country press, which centers the
life interests of each community within
itself, rather than focusing too much
attention upon our great cities, If
Paris were destroyed, all France would
be prostrate. If San ‘Francisco or
Chicago or New York were destroyed,
there would be no feeling of despair.
It would, however, arouse in the nation
a tremendous sympathy for the suf-
ferers from the calamity—a feeling
which would bear fruit in immediate
aid to the stricken city.—Printers’
Album.

How Lincoln Won the Horse Trade.
“Lincoln was a lawyer practicing in
the Illinois circuits at the time. He
and a judge once joked each other
about horse trades. The upshot of the
matter was. that the two agreed to
meet at a designated hour the next day
to make a trade. The horses up to the
hour of the trade were to be unseen.
There was to be no withdrawing from
the agreement under forfeiture of $25.
A few friends had heard the bet made,
and passed the word around. Asa re-
sult, quite a crowd was on hand to wit-
ness the exchange.
“The judge came up first, leading
about the worst looking animal he had
been able to find. Where he had ‘dis-
covered’ it no one ever knew. He had
not been at the appointed place but a
few minutes when Lincoln came up,
carrying a wooden saw-sorse on his
shoulders.
“The crowd which had gathered was
hilarious at the sight. This was great-
ly augmented when Lincoln sat down
on his saw-horse, critically surveyed
the judge’s imitation, and exclaimed:
“ ‘Well, judge, I must say, this is the
first time in my life I ever got the
