School Directors’ Convention—In-
teresting Program.
The seventeenth annual convention
of the School Directors’ Association of
Somerset County will be held in the
Assembly Room of the Court House
on Tuesday and Wednesday, January
14th and 15th. A program for the con-
vention, prepared by County Saperin-
tendent Seibert, has been sent to all of
the school directors.
The topics assigned for discussion
are as follows:
“The New Minimum Salary and Its
Effect Upon Our Schools,” D. A. Floto,
W. T. Geddes. Thomas E. Null.
“The Resignation of Teachers—Its
Effect, Its Prevention, ete.” R. W.
Lohr, L. S. Lincoln, W. 8. Matthews.
“The Director’s Duty in School Sani-
tation,” Dr. R. T. Pollard, Dr. O. J.
Shank, Dr. W. 8. Kuhlman.
Prof. R. M. McNeal, of the State De-
partment of Instruction, will discuss
“The Business Phase of School Admin-
istration,” “The School Director and
Public Sentiment,” and “The Educa-
tional Phase of School Administration.”
“The (Gradation of Teachers’ Sala-
ries,” Charles R. Hay, L.. L. Yoder, Dr.
M. V. Sorber.
“Township High Schoole,” Dr. C. F,
Livengood, C. L. Shaver, J. M. Lambert.
J. H. Gumbert.
“Economy in Employing the Best
Qualified Teachers,” L. A. Hay, L. C.
Boyer, E. L. Knepper, Pierce Miller.
“Music in the Public Schools.” Jacob
J. Walker.
“Truancy—Its Cause, Its
tion,” the Rev. W. C. Sykes, M.
Speicher, Wm. Engle, J. H. Hentz.
“The Value of Directors’ Conven-
tions,” the Rev. A. 8. Glessner.
Other features of the program will be
the annual address of J. M. Cook, pres-
ident of the Association, Topical Talks
by F. G. Fryburg and the Rev. D.S.
Weimer, Kindergarten Remarks by L:
C. Colborn, and a drill by the pupils of
the kindergarten.
An attractive feature of the conven-
tion will be a free lecture on Tuesday
evening, by Dr. W. T. Sherman Culp,
a man with mirth and a mission, who
has been on the lecture platform for a
number of years with great success.
He has been called again and again to
the same places. His subject will be
“Uncrowned Kings.”
The school directors’ convention is to
the director what thie annual teachers’
institute is to the teacher, and the di-
rector who takes an interest in school
work will be there. Under a recent
act of Assembly, directors are allowed
two dollars a day and mileage at the
rate of three cents. so that there can
be little excuse from that source for
not attending the convention. The
teacher iz not wholly responsible for
the condition of the school. Back of
the teacher is the board of directors
who, after all, are the court of last re-
rort. With them rests the final decis-
ion whether the schools shall be good
or bad, says the Somerset Standard.

Bowling News A New Power Has
Arisen in Sporting Circles.
Some time has elapsed since any
towling n>ws appeared in our columans,
ne interest in the American game of
ten pins has for some time appeared to
he on the wane. However, consider-
able interest has lately been aroused in
1 eal sporting circles in games played
hetween the erstwhile Salisbury Cham-
pions and a local scrub team that had
gufficient sand to go up against the
Champions in a contest. And what
makes the interest in the sport all the
more intense, is the fact that the
Scrubs have demonstrated their ability
fo beat the Champions most .unmerci-
fully.
On
evening three games
Monday
‘were pulled off between the Cham-
pions and the Scrubs, two of which
were won by the {8crubs. Following
are the scores: First gnme—Cham-
pions, 708; Scrubs, 779. Second game—
Champions, 779; Serubs, 623. Third
game—Champions, 6867 ; Scrubs, {98
In the last of the three games men-
tioned, the Scrubs piled up the highest
score ever made by any team on the
Salisbury ten pin alleys.
Last night three more games were
played on the home alleys by the two
teams aforesaid, the Scrubs again win-
ning two of them. Following are the
scores: First game—Champions, 707;
Scrubs, 892. Secondigame—Champions,
628; Scrubs, 732. Third game—Cham-
pions, 674; Scrubs, 780.
The Scrub team, Monday evening,
was composed of Harry Reitz, Robt.
Gibson, Jr., Clyde Wagner, Peter Fate
and Emory Musser. Last night John
Schramm took the place of Gibson in
the Scrub team. Owingto a charitable
feeling for the erstwhile Champions,
and in consideration of the good work
they have done in defeating the other
teams in the bowling league,
not publish their names at this time,
for it might cause them to feel bad.
As to the league games, concerning
which this paper has given no report
for some time, suffice it to say that the
Berlin team seems to be somewhat in
the lead, in the present series of con-
tests for the championship, while Mey-
ersdale has pulled its team entirely
out of the contest, owing to its inability
to be even common amusement for its
rivals.
A couple of weeks ago Salisbury de-
feated Somerset three straight games
on the Salisbury alleys, and in turn
was beaten three games on the Berlin
alleys, by the Berlin team,by a narrow
margin.

PAIN
Pain in the head—pain anywhere, has its cause.
| Pain is congestion, pain is blood pressure—nothing
else usually. At least, so says Dr. Shoop, and to
prove it he has created a little pink tablet.
Shoop's Headache Tablet—
lation.
If you have a headache, it's blood pressure.
If you are sleepless, restless, nervous, it's blood
congestion—blood pressure That surely is a
certainty, for Dr. Shoop’s Headache Tablets stop
it in 20 minutes, and the tablets simply distribute
the unnatural blood pressure.
Bruise your finger, and doesn't it get red, and
swell, and pain you? Of course it does. It's con-
gestion, blood pressure. You'll find it where pain
