The treasurer of a Canadian railroad
has confessed that he has been stealing
from the company for eighteen years
having in that time taken $180,000. It
will be difficult for some of our Amer-
ican grafters to understand how any-
one could possibly exercise such pa-
tience.—Chicago Record-Herald.

Somerset House to Change Hands.
A deal has been consumated for a
change in the management of the Som-
erset House, which will take place
about the first of the year. The new
proprietor will be Charles H. Moore, of
Indiana, Pa., and he has petitioned the
Court for a transfer of the liquor li-
conse, which will be heard on the 2nd
day of January. Mr. Moore owns a
hotel in Indiana, now under lease, and
he has been in the business for a num-
ber of years, says the Somerset Stand-

Railroad Company Buys Ties From
Hawali and Japan. ;
A striking instance of the scarcity of
timber suitable for railroad ties in the
United States is seen in the recent
purchase of the Atchison, Topeka &
Santa Fe Railway Company of 2,800,000
ties of ohia wood. from a lumber com-
pany operating in the Hawaiian
Islands. It has been difficult for some
time for the railroads of this country
to obtain wooden ties satisfactory both
in quantity and quality, and many of
them have been looking about for an
opportunity to purchase tie timber in
other countries.
During a recent trip of this kind by
a representative of the Atchison, To-
peka & Santa Fe Railway Company, ar-
rangements were made for the pur-
chase of ties, not only in the Hawaiian
Islands, but also in Japan. It is stated
that ties from Japan will be made
from a certain species of oak which
compares in lasting qualities very fa-
vorably with the white oak of this
country, which has been considered
the most satisfactory wood for tie pur-
poses. About a year ago, before the
representative of the railroad had
started on his trip, the United States
Forest Service made a few tests on the
ohia wood. The results indicated that,
in point of strength, ohia wood will
rank with the oaks. It was thought
from these tests that the wood was
worthy of further investigation. and
the large order placed by the railroad
indicates that their agent is confident
that Hawaiian wood will prove to be a
satisfactory material for railroad ties
under the conditions existing in this
country.

FITS A CITY COUNCILMAN AT.
KINGSTON, JAMAICA.
Mr. W. O'Reilly Fogarty, who is a
member of the City Council at Kings-
ton, Jamaica, West Indies, writes as
follows: “One bottle of Chamberlain’s
Cough Remedy had good effect on a
cough that was giving me trouble, and
I think I should have been more quick-
ly relieved if I had continued the
remedy. That it was beneficial and
quick in relieving me, there is no doubt,
and it is my intention to obtain another

Will Put Drinkers out of Church,
One of the most fiery temperance
sermons ever delivered at Franklin,
was a discourse several days since by
the Bev. M. P. Fikes, who recently
lectured in the Salisbury opera house
“If it is the last thing T ever do in
Franklin, I am going to drop from the
rolls of the church the name of every
man who goes into a saloon, a hotel or
a drug store for the purpose of pro-
curing liquor.”
He was particularly severe on the
drug stores, which, he said, furnished
liquor to men who were either ashamed
to go tothe bars, or had been shut off
by relatives. >
The Rev. Mr. Fikes ix pastor of the
First Baptist church of Franklin, Pu.
and he is the same man who created a
sensation a few years ago by advocat-
ing billiard room annexes for churches,
50 as to draw men to church by the
click of billiard balls.
It strikes the editor of this paper that
a church member in a saloon is no more
out of place than a billiard table in »
church, but we will admit that the
church member in a saloon and the
billiard table in a church are hardly in
their proper places. However, if it is
just and right to fire saloon-keepers
out of church on account of their oc-
cupation, it would be equally just to
fire drinking men, those who foster and
keep up the saloon-keepers’ business.
There should be justice all around,
and if such not the case in this
world, the scriptures assure us that it
will be in the next.

Courage for the New Year.
Have the courage to start right and
keep right.
Have the courage to turn from evil
and to eling to that which is good.
Have the courage to prefer comfort
and propriety to fashion in all things.
Have the courage to wear your old
clothes until you can pay for new ones,
Have the courage to discharge a debt
while you have the money in your
pocket.
Have the courage to obey your con-
science at the risk of being ridiculed
by men.
Have the courage to own you are
poor, and thus disarm poverty of its
sharpest sting.
Have the courage to do without that
which you do not need, however much
your eyes may covet it.
Have the courage to speak to a friend
in a “seedy” coat, even though you are
in company with a rich one, and richly
attired.
Have the courage to speak your
mind, when it is necessary you should
do so, and to hold your tongue when it
ie prudent you should do so.
Have the courage to show your re-
spect for honesty, in whatever guise it
appears; and your contempt for dis-
honesty and duplicity, by whomsoever
“exhibited.
Have the courage to “cut” the most
agreeable acquaintance you have when
you are convinced that he lacks prin-
ciple. “A friend should bear with a
friend’s infirmities, but not with his
vices.” :
_ Have the courage to stand by your
convictions, be both courteous and
firm, making no compromise with evil,
not turning into forbidden paths;
choose the right, reject the wrong; be
good and do good, and then you will
have a happy new year.

Weak Women
To weak and ailing women, there is at least one
way to help. But with that way, two treatments,
must be combined. One is local, cne is constitu-
tional, but both are important, both essential.
Dr. Shoop's Night Cure is the Local.
Dr. Shoop's Restorative, the Constitutional.
The former—Dr. Shoop's Night Cure—isa topical
mucous membrane suppository remedy, while Dr.
Bhoop's Restorative is wholly an internal treat-
ment. The Restorative reaches throughout the
entire system, seeking the repair of all nerve,
all tissue, and all blood ailments.
The ‘Night Cure’, as its name implies, does its
work while you sleep. It soothes sore and inflame
ed mucous surfaces, heals local weaknesses an@
discharges, while the Restorative, eases nervous
excitement, gives renewed vigor and ambition,
builds up wasted tissues, bringing about renewed
strength, vigor, and energy. Take Dr. Shoop's
Restorative—Tablets or Liquid—as a general tonie
to the system. For positive local help, use as well
